Chapter 44

Early the next morning, just as the sky began to pale, the gates of Red Rock City were already flung open.

Three figures pulled a crude freight wagon, heading toward the distance along a winding official road.

This escort mission was not the responsibility of Lynn alone; he had two companions: a man and a woman.

The man was named Bill, with a hideous scar running across his face. His rugged appearance involuntarily reminded Lynn of that Dreia Wizard.

The woman was named Mena. Heavily made up, her voluptuous figure was outlined perfectly by tight-fitting clothes and light armor, making her appear both dangerous and seductive.

From Lynn's observation, Bill and Mena were already far too familiar with one another—from their sticky dialogue, it was obvious they had already rolled around in bed many times.

Living on the edge of a blade every day, the men and women here possessed almost no conventional sense of morality.

Last night, the two had even tried to pull Lynn into their fray, but Lynn had no such interest; he was still busy consuming drugs for cultivation.

The employer had paid a deposit in advance and promised the balance upon completion of the task, while also stating that if the delivery could be made faster, the reward would be even more generous.

This left Bill and Mena full of drive, with almost no intention of wasting time.

Lynn had no objection to this; completing the task quickly aligned with his own interests.

And so, the group of three and one wagon set out from Red Rock City, traveling almost day and night.

Aside from necessary brief rests, they suffered no delays.

During this period, the entire Green Forest Province was under traffic control, which was quite troublesome.

Fortunately, relying on the transit documents provided by the employer and extra bribes of gold and silver, the official inspections caused them no trouble.

In the shadows, although some people attempted to strike them, the trio's strength was extraordinary, allowing them to resolve the threats easily without any impact.

Traveling at full speed, they crossed the Green Forest Province, traversed the Anda Province, and reached the border of the Blue Moon Province in just ten short days.

Beyond the Blue Moon Province lay the destination of this journey: the Pale Moon Plateau.

However, just as they stepped into the territory of the Blue Moon Province and were passing through a narrow mountain path, a group of figures suddenly blocked their way.

"So they've come after all," Lynn thought to himself.

He had long anticipated this. After all, such a high mission reward, combined with the employer's urgency, clearly meant that this batch of goods was no ordinary item, which would naturally attract the covetousness of certain ill-intentioned forces.

While there had been harassment previously, those were merely ordinary bandits and not much of a trouble.

Now, the ones blocking them were likely the very reason the employer had urged them to travel through the night.

As Lynn's gaze shifted over, his pupils suddenly constricted, for the opponent was a Transcendent!

At the end of the mountain path, a middle-aged man with white hair stood quietly. Clad in a long robe, his eyes were piercing, locking onto Lynn and his companions like a hawk.

His aura was cold and oppressive; the surrounding air seemed to stagnate because of him.

"A Level 2 Wizard Apprentice?"

Through the crystal ball in his bosom, Lynn quickly detected the opponent's strength: Mental Power 13, Constitution 3.

Since this strength was too weak, Lynn judged that the opponent clearly did not belong to the Night Shadow Bunker coalition, but his identity remained a mystery, so Lynn did not act rashly.

"Looking for death! Ram through them!"

Bill and Mena, however, failed to notice anything unusual.

Bill grinned, gripping the reins of the wagon, showing absolutely no respect for the opponent.

With the sound of wheels grinding against the mountain road, Bill drove the wagon toward the white-haired man.

However, just as the wagon was about to collide with him—

The man raised his head slightly, chanting an unknown incantation in a low voice.

Suddenly, a freezing aura permeated the air, and the earth violently split open. Several pale, bone-like branches thrust out from the ground like long spears, piercing straight upward!

*Puchi—*

The sharp branches instantly impaled the horses and the wagon body. Blood splattered everywhere, and the wagon let out a loud crash before overturning on the ground.

The ferocious smiles on Bill and Mena's faces were replaced by terror. They were thrown from the wagon by the intense impact, hitting the ground heavily.

Lynn, having prepared in advance, rolled outward a couple of times, avoiding the center of the shockwave.

He crouched vigilantly on the ground, staring coldly at the white-haired man before him.

"A wizard... it's actually a wizard!"

Bill and Mena had lost their usual arrogance, their entire bodies trembling like sieves.

They had never imagined that the one blocking them was the legendary, terrifying existence: the Wizard who uses blood as a sacrifice and humans as food!

If those pale branches rising from the ground hadn't failed to pierce through the horses, the two of them would likely have been skewered like meat on a spit.

The white-haired middle-aged man cast a cold glance at the two lying on the ground, his eyes devoid of any mercy.

He spoke slowly, his voice like ice: "Hand over the Count of Green Forest's belongings."

Hearing these words, Bill and Mena looked at each other, clearly having no idea what they meant.

Lynn's heart jolted

"The Count of Green Forest's belongings..."

He took a deep breath, his gaze heavy as he scanned the overturned wagon, finally stopping at the damaged cargo crate.

Was the white-haired man's statement not directed at them, but at the crate... or something inside the crate?

"It seems you know nothing. Go, open the crate!"

The man's indifferent voice interrupted Lynn's thoughts, simultaneously confirming his suspicion.

The man looked directly at Bill and Mena and pulled an old bell from his bosom.

*Ding-ling—*

The crisp ringing of the bell echoed through the silent mountain path, carrying a bizarre rhythm.

Bill and Mena's expressions instantly became vacant, their eyes losing focus as if they had lost all ability to think.

Lynn also felt a wave of dizziness, as if countless needle tips were stabbing his brain.

He quickly suppressed the discomfort. Instead of rushing to break free, he quietly mimicked Bill and Mena's expressions, feigning the same dazed state.

Bill and Mena turned mechanically, their steps stumbling as they walked slowly toward the crate behind the wagon.

One step, two steps, three steps...

Just as their hands were about to touch the crate, a sudden upheaval shattered the silence!

*Boom!*

The crate exploded, wood splinters flying everywhere, as a green shadow lunged violently from within.

It was a monster radiating a bizarre green light—its entire body was twisted like vegetation, a small tree-man shaped like a goblin.

Its face was ugly and ferocious, its eyes flashing with bloodthirsty light, and its palms were like thick tree roots covered in barbs.

The Green Treeman did not hesitate, its massive palms instantly slamming toward Bill and Mena.

The two were controlled by the bell's influence and were completely unable to react.

Even in a normal state, they would never have been able to block such a lethal blow.

*Chila!*

The Green Treeman's hands came down like giant hammers, directly crushing Bill and Mena's heads into pieces!

Blood and brain matter splattered in all directions, and a stench immediately filled the air.

The monster let out a low roar, and in the next second, its body leaped up, lunging toward the white-haired man!
