Transmigrated as an Ability-User Girl in the Eighties

Chapter 13: Starting Work

Hearing someone speaking up for her, Luo Qiao nodded gratefully to the woman, while casting a glance at the woman named Xiulan who had been making sarcastic remarks. From her appearance, she looked like a mean-spirited person.

Seeing Sun Haitang speaking on Luo Qiao's behalf, Li Xiulan gave a cold snort and said, "Sun Haitang, you're always sticking your nose in everything. I'm just telling the truth."

Luo Qiao said, "I receive work points for the amount of work I do. Thank you for your concern, Auntie Xiulan."

Li Xiulan rolled her eyes at Luo Qiao. "Who's concerned about you? Just don't hold everyone else back."

Qiao Lanlan, the production brigade leader's wife, walked over and said to Li Xiulan, "Say a little less. Use that time to worry about your second and third sons instead."

Hearing Qiao Lanlan's words, Li Xiulan fell silent. Her two sons were tall and sturdy, but unfortunately, each was lazier than the last, shirking work every single day.

In a year, they earned fewer work points than the local children. Now that they were in their twenties, no family was willing to marry their daughters to such men, especially since Li Xiulan's sharp tongue had made her quite unpopular in the village.

Once most people had arrived, the brigade leader began assigning tasks. It was now March, and the ground was slowly thawing. Today's task was to transport the farm manure that had been decomposing all winter to the fields to spread it.

In a few days, they could begin spring sowing after a shallow plowing with iron plows. Luo Qiao's task today was the same as the brigade leader's wife's; after the male laborers used tractors, donkey carts, or ox carts to deliver the decomposed manure to the fields, the women would use shovels to spread it.

The original owner of this body looked thin, but she had done plenty of work on the farm previously and possessed considerable strength. Combined with the nourishment from the space's well water over the past few days, she was quite efficient at working.

However, the soul inside this body was now the Luo Qiao from the future. Having grown up in the city, she had never done such labor; even in the apocalypse, she had only used her abilities to accelerate plant growth.

Although the manure was truly pungent, she was someone who had survived the apocalypse after all. Since it was her first day of work, she couldn't afford to let people gossip, so she worked hard to ignore the smell.

This earned her more goodwill from Qiao Lanlan, the brigade leader's wife, who felt that at least this girl was truly capable of supporting herself. She even shared many tips on farming techniques with her.

Lu Yichen, the brigade's tractor driver, spotted the young girl busy in the fields from a distance. Seeing how thin she looked—as if a strong gust of wind might blow her away—he couldn't help but steal a few extra glances.

After finishing work in the morning, Luo Qiao truly felt exhausted. Although she had dealt with planting quite a bit in her past life, she had never performed such heavy manual labor. Fortunately, she had the original owner's memories, which kept her from being completely clumsy.

Upon returning home at noon, she boiled a pot of hot water in the courtyard kitchen. She was afraid that if her chimney didn't smoke, people might become suspicious.

While resting, she tended the fire. Once the water was hot, she removed the firewood, retrieved a medium-sized bathtub from the storage room in her space, cleaned it, and filled it with water.

After locking the main gate, she moved the tub into the bedroom, closed the doors and windows, and took a long, satisfying bath to recover. She suspected it would take several consecutive days of work to fully adapt.

After pouring the leftover water into the courtyard and cleaning the tub, she took a large bowl of rice porridge from her space. She ate her lunch with some previously pickled spicy cucumbers and radish strips, along with two leftover scallion pancakes from the morning.

She took a nap in the bedroom within her space and only emerged to prepare for work when she heard the sound of the gongs.

After locking the main gate, she headed toward the fields. The afternoon's work was the same as the morning's: spreading manure in the fields.
