Chapter 31: The Abnormal Overachiever
"How did your first day of class feel?"
On the way down the mountain to the dormitories, the second-year little witches asked the first-year juniors about their experiences with concern.
"It was amazing!"
"We all successfully activated our energy vision today!"
"I used my energy vision several times! My eyes were filled with colors, but it didn't hinder my sight at all—in fact, I felt like I could see even more clearly!"
...
The second-year little witches: "???"
This was a bit different from what they had expected!
Lilith couldn't help but ask, "You didn't feel a headache? Or eye pain?"
The first-year little witches: "No!"
"My eyes were a little sore, though. It's all my fault; I kept thinking the greener the development paper became, the better. The lightest green I mastered was only slightly lighter than medium green," Cheryl said regretfully.
"Wait! The lightest? Exactly how many levels of magical infiltration have you mastered?" Lilith noticed something was wrong.
"Three levels!"
"Me too, three!"
"I have two. If I had known, I would have gone back to the classroom to practice earlier during lunch."
"I have five, haha!"
...
The first-year little witches all spoke up at once.
The second-year little witches were left stunned.
"Wait, are the little witches these days this powerful?"
Back in their day, how long did it take them to master multiple levels of magical infiltration?
At the very least, it certainly wasn't on the first day of school.
Back then, because the degree of magical infiltration exceeded their eyes' tolerance, they had to endure headaches and eye pain for several days before they could adapt.
How was it so easy for the juniors?
"We're nothing! Moran, Vasida, and Sylph are the real powerhouses! They've mastered every level of magical infiltration that makes the development paper turn green. Especially Moran—she can use her magic to draw on the development paper at will!" Aes said.
The second-year little witches looked at Moran and the other two in shock, especially Moran.
To this day, none of them felt confident enough to draw on development paper.
Of course, that was also because no little witch had bothered to practice it.
Even though the three of them were witches, wasn't Lilith a witch too? She had only adapted slightly faster than them, suffering a few less days of hardship.
"By the way, where is your development paper? Didn't the Headmistress tell you to bring it along to practice more after class?" another senior asked.
"No! Didn't we already figure out the general relationship between the color changes of the development paper and the amount of magical power used during class?"
"Exactly! The Headmistress only told us to practice with moderation and not to be too impatient! Isn't that how it is for you seniors too?"
The second-year little witches: "..."
They suspected the Headmistress had been swapped out!
One senior even asked, "Was the one teaching you Headmistress Amisha? The one in the black robe?"
"Yes! Didn't the Headmistress say that every one of them is her? It must be some kind of powerful magic! It's a pity she won't tell us what it is until we graduate."
"I suspect every Headmistress is different! Otherwise, how could the gap be so large? Tell us exactly what happened in class today!"
...
"What? You practiced by yourselves for two hours during lunch?"
"Don't you guys go touring the castle?"
"No, wait, I saw you guys touring the castle!"
"What? You went straight back to the classroom to practice? Why? It's your first time exploring the academy castle—don't you want to chat about it after you get back?"
The second-year little witches were even more bewildered.
Normally, what little witch would engage in hard training during a break? Especially on the first day of school, when there was no academic pressure and nothing much to learn yet.
"I saw others practicing, so I started practicing too!" Cheryl said. "If I had known they were working so hard, I wouldn't have spent so much time wandering the castle. Because I practiced less, I didn't master enough, and my eyes are a bit sore."
"Me too!"
"Me too!"
"So, who was the first one to start?"
"I know that. Alba and I came back early, and as soon as we arrived, we saw Moran, Vasida, and Sylph practicing. They were so serious. Since the witches are working so hard, we obviously can't be lazy!" Aes said, raising her hand.
The focus shifted back to Moran and the other two.
"Moran was the first to start. By the time Sylph and I came back, she was already able to use magic to draw on the development paper," Vasida said.
Sylph nodded as well. "Her? She went to the washroom right after class, and as soon as she came back, she started practicing. At first, Vasida and I didn't understand the point of practicing like that, but after seeing the results, we couldn't sit still either."
The first-year little witches weren't surprised at all. After all, during the afternoon class, they had already witnessed how much of an overachiever Moran was, and they had even joined in on the "grind" themselves.
They hadn't expected to scare the seniors so much.
Looking at Moran, the second-year little witches had an epiphany: "So it's not that the Headmistresses are different, it's because you have Moran!"
Moran: (`)
"Moran! Are you sure your talent manifestation is called the 'Book of Cards'? Instead of the 'Book of Overachievers'?" Lilith asked.
Who said Moran wasn't abnormal? She thought it was quite abnormal—abnormally hardworking!
Moran: "..."
"Let's go, let's go! Hurry up! Let's go back and review today's lessons!"
"You guys go ahead! I just remembered I haven't gone to the library to collect the books on the second-year required reading list!"
...
The second-year little witches lost all interest in further chatting. Those returning to the dorms or the academy castle quickened their pace.
No matter what, they couldn't let the juniors surpass them, right?
What did they mean, the first-years are the most hardworking batch the Headmistress has ever taught? They had to show the Headmistress that they were working very hard too!
"Hey! Seniors! Slow down, wait for us!" After the first-year little witches realized what was happening, they also quickened their pace.
Hearing this, the second-years ran even faster.
Vasida and Sylph had been running along when they suddenly realized someone wasn't moving. They stopped and called out to her, "Moran, what are you doing? Hurry up!"
Moran shook her head. "We only learned how to use magical infiltration to activate energy vision. What's the rush to run back? Isn't it better to walk slowly and feel the energy vision on the way? The view from the mountain is wide open; we can see much more spectacular natural energy!"
Vasida and Sylph thought that made sense. They weren't like the seniors; they didn't have as much to learn yet, so why rush back in a panic?
They tried to call the other little witches, only to find they had already vanished from sight.
The two of them also activated their energy vision and gazed into the distance with Moran.
"Wow! The natural energy over by the herb garden is so dense! There must be many magical plants there!"
"And over there, so far away... that should be the inner area, or maybe even the outer area!"
"Quick, look back! There are many energy traces in the academy castle too!"
