Chapter 5: 5. Shi Damei 1

5. Shi Er-mei 1 Shi Nan, a twenty-four-year-old soul from the twenty-first century! She never expected that she would actually transmigrate into the body of a village girl during the Republican Era! She had transmigrated after an accident occurred while she was sitting in her cousin's car returning to the city following the funeral of her grandmother, with whom she had lived dependently for nineteen years! Perhaps because there was no one left in that world worth her lingering attachment to, when she woke up in the body of sixteen-year-old Shi Er-mei, she did not panic or feel the longing of her previous life! In any case, life was a struggle regardless; how was one era any different from another?

It was just that this Republican Era was a "Pseudo-Republican Era"! It differed too greatly from the historical knowledge she had learned in school! For a moment, Shi Nan did not know what kind of plans to make for the future! She could only adapt for a while before contemplating how to activate a "golden finger"!

That day, out of anger, Shi Er-mei had run out crying in the middle of the night and accidentally fell into a large earthen pit by the roadside; in truth, she was already near death when she was rescued! When Shi Nan transmigrated, Shi Er-mei's final sliver of consciousness had already begun to dissipate. Shi Nan captured her final fragments of memory, which allowed her to gain a bit of understanding regarding the Shi family. Among them, that sister-in-law, Tian Laidi, was someone Shi Nan truly could not like or accept; she simply took advantage of the original host's resentment toward Tian Laidi and played along with it!

She had originally thought that if Tian Laidi realized her previous impure intentions and stopped mentioning the matter of betrothing Shi Er-mei to her foolish younger brother, Shi Nan would slowly get along with her. Who would have thought that after two months had passed, Tian Laidi would bring the matter up again? If Shi Nan allowed her to sway Lady Li once more and cause a scene, it would be better to crush her idea right now!

At night, Shi Er-mei, Old Man Shi, and Lady Li lived in the east room, while Shi Shun and Tian Laidi lived in the west room. However, the two rooms were separated only by a kitchen; if there was even a slight commotion, it could be heard even with the doors closed!

The lights in both rooms had been extinguished. After a day of exhaustion, Old Man Shi and his wife spoke with Shi Er-mei about the fruit wine for a while before falling into a yawn-filled sleep. Because Shi Er-mei went to sleep late, she heard the faint sounds of crying and talking coming from the west room, with the occasional sound of Shi Shun's voice.

Shi Er-mei couldn't hear clearly what was being said over there, but she could guess that her sister-in-law was complaining about her disrespectful attitude as a sister-in-law!

Sure enough, Tian Laidi was clutching her quilt, shedding tears of grievance and complaining to Shi Shun about how his sister was bullying her!

"Even if Er-mei has her faults, you shouldn't bring up your brother's matter again," Shi Shun said with a frown, clearly unhappy. "Big Sister has already married into such a family for the sake of our marriage; Er-mei's marriage cannot be any worse. This was also Big Sister's wish!"

As soon as Tian Laidi heard her husband mention the other sister-in-law, she felt even more wronged!

"How is Big Sister's marriage not good? Look at what she was wearing and what she was adorned with when she came back last time; she's many times better than those young wives in our village! Even the fabric and pastries she brought back for Er-mei were high-quality goods from the county!"

The most hateful part was that Big Sister had brought a plain brown piece of fabric for her mother-in-law, Lady Li, and a peach-colored piece of fabric printed with white peach blossoms for Er-mei, yet she hadn't even brought a single thread for her as a sister-in-law! Even the pastries were placed directly in the room where her parents-in-law and Er-mei stayed, saying they were for the physically weak Er-mei to eat! This made Tian Laidi feel utterly sickened!
