My luck started turning around after my divorce.
Chapter 15: You really were following me
Chen Feng, who was leaning forward to talk to the driver, nearly flew headfirst into the front of the car and couldn't help but curse.
"How the hell are you driving?"
The driver jumped out of the car and immediately began loudly accusing the driver of the car in front who had just stepped out.
Chen Feng had seen what happened. Everything had been going smoothly until the car ahead suddenly slammed on its brakes.
The taxi driver might have been distracted while talking to Chen Feng, causing him to fail to brake in time.
The driver in front was a woman in her thirties with a decent temperament.
Ignoring the taxi driver's tone, she first went to the back of her car to inspect the damage before saying, "Decide if you want to settle this privately or officially. If it's private, we each fix our own cars; if it's official, we wait for the traffic police."
The taxi driver said, "Private is fine, but you owe me a thousand yuan. My entire bumper needs to be replaced."
The woman grew angry upon hearing this and said, "Then you pay for my repairs too. It's not expensive, just five thousand yuan will do."
The taxi driver raised his voice even more, "Are you being reasonable? You slammed on your brakes out of nowhere; otherwise, would I have rear-ended you?"
The woman said with a cold face, "You're the one being unreasonable. My car is my car, and your car is your car. You're trying to take advantage by fixing yours separately while trying to extort money from me."
The woman was driving an Audi worth several hundred thousand yuan, and it looked relatively new; a taxi naturally couldn't compare.
"Just because your car is better doesn't mean you're right! Besides, if you're driving normally and suddenly slam on your brakes, it's definitely your fault," the taxi driver said, neck stiff with indignation.
Chen Feng felt somewhat speechless. In a rear-end collision, the responsibility almost always lies with the following vehicle for failing to maintain a safe distance. That was how traffic laws were generally written.
It was obvious that this taxi driver thought the female driver would be an easy target for extortion; otherwise, he would have called the police long ago.
However, since the driver had been distracted, which was partly due to Chen Feng being his passenger, Chen Feng felt it wasn't his place to say much.
At that moment, a woman wearing sunglasses stepped out of the Audi and said impatiently, "Sister E, what's the point of talking to someone like this? Just call the police. Do you think we female drivers don't understand traffic laws?"
Hearing this, the female driver reached for her phone to call the police, but the taxi driver blocked her, shouting angrily, "Don't you dare call the police!"
After saying that, the taxi driver reached out and pushed the woman who had just stepped out, causing her to stumble and fall back against her car.
The taxi driver was still not appeased and pointed a finger at her, cursing, "Watch your damn mouth! What do you mean 'someone like this'? Do you look down on us common folk?"
He stepped forward, glaring down at her as if he were about to hit her.
Chen Feng originally didn't want to get involved, but seeing this, he quickly opened the car door, stepped forward to restrain the taxi driver, and advised, "Alright, alright. Don't be impulsive. This was just a normal traffic accident; if this escalates, you could end up detained."
"I didn't hit her! This woman has a foul mouth. You heard her, she insulted me first."
The taxi driver's mind finally cleared a bit. He took a couple of steps back and stopped being so aggressive.
"Alright, beautiful lady, don't call the police either. I'm sure you're in a hurry to get somewhere, and so are we. You probably aren't short on money. How about this: let's both take a step back and settle this privately. You give this driver a few hundred yuan for repairs, and we'll call it even."
Chen Feng was essentially playing mediator, leaning slightly toward the taxi driver. Of course, his main concern was the safety of the two women.
This taxi driver seemed to have a violent temper; if he actually tried to hit someone, Chen Feng wouldn't be able to stop him.
Even if the two women took a bit of a loss, at least they wouldn't get beaten up.
Sister E nodded and said, "Fine, I'll give you five hundred. If not, we'll do it officially."
"No, at least eight hundred," the taxi driver insisted, becoming stubborn again.
Chen Feng immediately became displeased; this taxi driver was being ungrateful for the peace offering.
Furthermore, his behavior made Chen Feng, the mediator, lose face, and he couldn't be bothered to persuade him any further.
He turned to go back to the car to get his luggage and call another taxi; he didn't care what happened here anymore.
Just as he turned around, he heard the sound of sirens, and a traffic policeman on a motorcycle approached.
Sister E hurriedly raised her hand and shouted to the officer, "Officer, I'm reporting a crime!"
Seeing this, the taxi driver panicked and said, "No need to trouble the police, we're settling this privately, each fixing our own."
"No!" the woman who had just been pushed shouted, "I'm reporting you! You pushed me just now!"
Immediately after, a police car arrived.
The taxi driver was completely overwhelmed; he had messed up.
Chen Feng shook his head inwardly, walked over to open the taxi door, picked up his luggage bag, and prepared to walk toward the curb.
"Officer, catch him! That man is in league with this taxi driver. I suspect they are professional scammers!"
As the woman in sunglasses shouted, everyone turned to look at Chen Feng, who was carrying his luggage.
The taxi driver was the first to react. Being quite loyal, he quickly clarified for Chen Feng, "Scammers? We are honest people. He's a passenger I just picked up from the airport. He just got off a plane not long ago; we don't even know each other. How could we be in league?"
Chen Feng also looked at the woman with speechlessness and said coldly, "Please use your brain before you speak. Have you forgotten we were on the same flight? I accidentally bumped into you right before we landed."
The woman in sunglasses suddenly looked enlightened. She let out a few "ohs" and said, "No wonder you looked familiar. So it was you! You intentionally bumped into me on the plane, and now you're intentionally letting this taxi driver hit me. Who exactly are you? Are you stalking me? What's your scheme?"
Chen Feng was completely defeated. He didn't want to waste any more time on a woman with mental issues.
He carried his luggage and crossed the street while traffic was light.
The woman in sunglasses was unwilling to let it go and still wanted the police to arrest Chen Feng. However, the police ignored her, leaving her to stomp her feet in frustration.
To stay far away from her, he didn't hail a car there. He walked at least several hundred meters before flagging down a passing taxi.
This time, he finally arrived smoothly at his intended five-star hotel.
It wasn't a presidential suite, not because Chen Feng was stingy, but because the online booking service didn't offer it.
However, the luxury suite he booked was excellent—spacious, with high-end decor. More importantly, standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window and looking at the urban night view gave him a sense of decadent luxury.
The room rate of over seven thousand yuan a night was equivalent to nearly two months of his previous salary.
In the past, he never would have dreamed of being so extravagant and corrupt. But now that he had tens of millions, spending it like this didn't hurt at all.
Of course, this might have something to do with the fact that he was dying.
If he didn't have a terminal illness, even with over ten million in savings, he probably wouldn't spend it this way.
After standing by the window for a while, he took a shower and changed into clean clothes.
Looking at the time, it was almost 8:00 PM, and his stomach was growling with hunger.
He tidied up in the bathroom, took his room card, and headed out. This five-star hotel had a restaurant, and its buffet had very good online reviews, priced at 588 yuan per person, with many people saying it was worth it.
He opened the door, went out, closed it, and had only walked a few steps toward the elevator when he ran straight into two women.
"It's you! You really were stalking me!" the woman cried out in terror.
Sister E also looked at Chen Feng with suspicion and stepped forward to shield the woman in sunglasses.
