The Underworld's Countercurrent
Chapter 19: The Overlord Throws His Halberd
As Li Yela come sliced the altar in two, the brick house collapsed with a thunderous roar, instantly burying him beneath the rubble.
Witnessing this, Wang De was gripped by a mixture of terror and horror.
That altar was his greatest trump card, the secret behind his family's rise to power.
And now, it was crumbling before his very eyes.
He... had lost the protection of the Ghost Immortal!
"How can this be? What happened? The Ghost Immortal..."
In his moment of panic, Wang De saw the detective, who was still lying on the ground in the distance, raising his gun at him once again.
Overcome by terror, Wang De immediately shook the silver bell and commanded the Dual-Blade Knight: "Kill them!"
Having just endured the dragging of the shadows, everyone present except Wang De felt as though they had just stumbled back from the gates of hell. Their states were extremely low; they could barely even stand.
Now that the Ghost Immortal's altar was gone and his greatest reliance had vanished, Wang De knew he had to kill the resisting forces present right now if he had any hope of escaping.
Only after finding that young man with the black umbrella could he possibly survive and make a comeback.
As his bell rang, the Dual-Blade Knight, who had been standing frozen after being entangled by the shadow-arm, vanished instantly and reappeared directly in front of the detective. The twin blades slashed down rapidly!
The detective, unable to scramble up in time, felt a surge of anger and fear. He had no confidence in facing a knight who possessed two abilities—the equivalent of a second-awakened psionic user.
He executed a practiced backroll, attempting to create distance. Unexpectedly, the Dual-Blade Knight lunged forward with a one-handed thrust, while the other hand swung horizontally in a continuous assault, seemingly anticipating the detective's movement.
The detective rolled quickly, but his shoulder was pierced through.
"Aaaah!" The detective roared. Instead of pulling away, he allowed the blade to pierce his shoulder, using the momentum to grab the knight's arm. He leaped up, wrapping his legs around the knight's arm in a leg lock to execute a joint lock: "Hurry!"
Almost simultaneously, a raspy voice rang out: "[Listen to me]—commit suicide immediately!"
It was Cheese. She was currently slumped on the stairs, her evening gown torn to shreds. Looking utterly disheveled, she struggled to look toward Wang De, exerting her ability once more: "[Listen to me]—commit suicide immediately!"
Previously, Cheese's hypnosis against Wang De had been resisted by the Ghost Immortal's protection.
Now that the altar was destroyed, Wang De could no longer resist the power of a second-awakened Whisperer.
Wang De sensed something was wrong when he realized his own arm was attempting to reach into his coat to draw a gun.
His body... his body was actually executing the other person's command! The Ghost Immortal's protection had begun to fade, leaving him unable to resist this force!
In a state of panic, Wang De ordered the Dual-Blade Knight again: "Kill that bitch first! Fast!"
As long as Cheese was dead, he wouldn't be influenced by this power to commit suicide.
He had to be fast; he had to kill this woman before the Ghost Immortal's protection vanished completely!
The Dual-Blade Knight, receiving the order, attempted to use mist-form flash, but because of the detective's close-quarters restraint, he could not activate his ability.
He could only forcibly lift the detective and charge toward Cheese with his other hand wielding the great blade.
In less than two seconds, the knight had reached the bottom of the stairs, looking as if he would decapitate Cheese in the next instant.
Suffering under the influence of the curse, a desperate Cheese grabbed a dagger, attempting to stall for just a few more seconds.
She had seen Wang De raise his pistol; he was about to commit suicide! She just needed a few more seconds...
However, at the exact moment the knight's blade was raised, and at the exact moment a triumphant smile appeared on Wang De's face...
A muffled boom erupted from the ruins of the collapsed brick house.
A blood-soaked figure, wielding a blade to shatter the fallen beams, lunged out of the rubble. It was Li Yela!
Had he been facing a collapse before becoming a psionic, Li Yela would likely have been killed or severely injured.
But as a psionic, his psionic barrier had shielded him from the falling bricks and beams, allowing him to escape the ruins rapidly.
Without a moment's hesitation, the instant he cleared the rubble, Li Yela gripped his long blade in a reverse hold, pulling his right arm back. He was clearly preparing to launch an attack!
"Wait, ret—" Before Wang De could even register the shock on his face or command the knight to defend, his voice was cut short by a whistle that tore through the air.
A crimson long blade had pierced through his neck, pinning him firmly to the wall.
Li Yela had not wasted time approaching Wang De. Had he done so, the detective and Cheese might have died.
Instead, he chose the fastest method of execution: he had thrown the long blade!
Using the long blade as a spear to strike down Wang De!
This was the Overlord's Halberd Throw!
With no final words, Wang De's eyes bulged. After a gurgling sound escaped his throat, he died.
Simultaneously, the knight halted his swinging blade and threw off the detective. He retracted his weapon and stood still, seemingly waiting for the next command.
A blood-covered Li Yela stepped quickly toward Wang De. He did not pull the crimson blade out; instead, he raised an axe and delivered a finishing blow to Wang De's body.
Only after taking the silver bell from Wang De's left hand did he breathe a sigh of relief.
"Are you guys okay?" Li Yela looked toward the back.
"I'm fine, but Cheese doesn't look good," the detective, also collapsed on the ground, shouted with effort.
Li Yela's expression changed. Ignoring the retrieval of his long blade, he rushed toward the stairs.
Cheese's curse required her to consume a sufficient amount of sugar after using her ability; otherwise, her heart would weaken.
Though she had escaped the shadows due to the destruction of the altar, the specialized saccharin she carried seemed to have been lost. She was currently being threatened by the curse.
When Li Yela reached the stairs, he saw a pale Cheese leaning weakly against the wall.
Her magnificent dark-red strapless gown had been torn apart by the black arms, exposing her fair abdomen, thighs, and more.
She weakly clutched her chest, looking at Li Yela. Her mouth opened slightly, but the words that came out were irreverent: "Want it while it's hot?"
"You really are a bit messed up!"
Li Yela hurriedly took off his suit jacket, which already had several tears, and covered her with it.
He then hoisted her onto his shoulder. He had no leisure to appreciate the warmth of her body as he rushed out of the basement.
Fortunately, Li Yela had seen the kitchen of this mansion earlier. He carried Cheese straight into the kitchen.
Because his face was covered in blood and his double pupils held an immense intimidating aura, the servants and chefs in the kitchen fled immediately.
Li Yela didn't care. Enduring the curse of misfortune, he searched the kitchen rapidly. After being struck by several kitchen knives, he finally found white sugar and rock candy.
He propped Cheese up, stuffed a handful of sugar into her mouth, and forced a large gulp of milk down her throat to help her swallow.
"Cough, cough, cough!" Cheese coughed, milk trickling from the corner of her mouth, sliding down her pale neck and delicate collarbone, disappearing beneath the suit jacket.
However, her complexion improved significantly, and she regained the ability to move freely.
She wiped the milk from her mouth and neck and gave Li Yela a reproachful look.
"You almost choked me to death, and now I'm covered in this," Cheese began to complain. "You pervert!"
Li Yela ignored her teasing and finally let out a sigh of relief.
After removing his facial mask and washing the blood from his face, he sat on the floor, panting. "That was exhausting."
Cheese had put on Li Yela's suit. Li Yela was over 1.8 meters tall, while Cheese was around 1.6 meters.
His clothes were large enough to cover her upper body and the exposed skin of her thighs.
Cheese's eyes held a soft smile, though her words were still critical: "I just came here for a meal, and it nearly killed me."
"This side job is more dangerous than I thought," Li Yela muttered. "Now that Wang De is dead, I don't know if we'll even get the reward."
However, shortly after sitting down, a loud whistling sound echoed through the air, as if something had crashed down.
Li Yela was startled. Was there another enemy?
In the next instant, someone rushed into the kitchen at a speed even Li Yela could not track. The speed was so great that it created a gust of wind in the kitchen.
The person's skin was bright red, and golden light radiated from their eyes.
The terrifying pressure made Li Yela feel momentarily suffocated.
But quickly, the pressure subsided.
Because the person spoke: "Are you guys okay?"
Only then did Li Yela recognize him—it was his captain, Yang Chen!
This... wasn't Yang Chen performing an investigation in the Old Town? Even if Cheese had called for backup, how could he have arrived so quickly?
And this state he was in...
"The True Martial Path is the Captain's fifth-awakened ultra-rare ability. Due to the surge in blood and qi, his skin turns red, much like Guan Yu. Thus, this ability is called the 'Martial Saint Form.' Against that knight you were just fighting, he could probably punch the stuffing out of him with one hit," Cheese explained, seemingly sensing Li Yela's confusion.
She then spoke to Yang Chen: "It's handled. There's no danger for now, but there are wounded in the basement."
"Moon Shadow went to the basement ahead of me to tend to the wounded," Yang Chen replied, his expression somewhat strange.
He indeed no longer felt that terrifying surge of rage.
Just now, he thought a Void Creature was attempting to force its way into the physical world.
Not just him, the entire Megacity officialdom had been alerted. Thousands of Iron Guards had been deployed, and a large number of official handlers were rushing over.
Yet, everything was calm now. The shadow projected by that Void Creature had vanished rapidly, and no one knew exactly what had happened.
Of course, the Void was extremely dangerous. Perhaps that entity had discovered something and fled quickly.
"What about the Taboo Object?" Yang Chen continued.
After a moment of thought, Li Yela replied, "The Ghost Immortal altar? I chopped it down! It was an emergency; I had no choice."
"Indeed. If it weren't for him, Captain, you would have arrived only to collect our corpses," Cheese said, standing behind Li Yela in his suit.
Yang Chen looked at them in shock. "I was wondering why that entity was roaring. You actually destroyed the Taboo Object? That's too dangerous! If it had truly entered the physical world, no one would have been able to save you!"
"Is it... not allowed to attack Taboo Objects?" Li Yela asked, puzzled. He hadn't yet researched the data regarding Taboo Objects.
"It's not that. If we could safely eliminate Taboo Objects, that would be best, as they are hidden risks. But as I've said before, Taboo Objects are the manifestations of certain powers in the physical world. They often contain rule-based powers. The risk of completely destroying one is immense. Therefore, our Department's method is suppression, to be used when necessary."
Li Yela felt a chill of lingering fear, but thinking carefully, he had no other choice but to split the altar.
"However, this time might have been luck, or..." Yang Chen hesitated. Looking at Li Yela, he couldn't quite convince himself it was just luck.
He could only guess: "Or perhaps it was bad luck—multiple entities were drawn at once, and after sensing each other, they retreated, allowing the incident to pass peacefully."
Li Yela's heart stirred. Yang Chen's deduction was very close. But 'Mr. Shadow' didn't just scare off the Ghost Immortal; he directly ate...
At that moment, Cheese chimed in: "Multiple? Then Xiao Ye's luck is way too bad. Even when Void entities show up, they can't stand him?"
"His misfortune is indeed a problem. I'll have to ask headquarters if there's a way to suppress it," Yang Chen replied. "It's not good for him to be this unlucky. If he gets struck by lightning one day just walking outside, I won't even have anyone to complain to. I have such a big teammate here..."
Li Yela retorted, "You'd better just be talking!"
He made a silent vow: if he was outdoors when it thundered, he would absolutely not use his abilities! With his level of misfortune, lightning would definitely strike his head!
Soon, many police cars and ambulances swarmed into the manor.
Medical personnel quickly loaded the Wang family members and the detective into ambulances.
Seeing the detective was also there, Li Yela intended to hitch a ride, but Cheese stopped him.
"Don't go spreading your bad luck to others. I'll take you back later," Cheese complained, having changed back into a hoodie. "Did you forget about those three ambulances earlier?"
That was true. After Li Yela fought the Skinner and lost consciousness, he was sent to the hospital, only for three ambulances to break down. In the end, it was Yang Chen who had carried him into the hospital.
Realizing this, Li Yela returned to his room to wait.
He sighed, "When will this misfortune ever end?"
Due to Wang De's actions, much of his wealth would be investigated and frozen.
He wondered if that girl in the white dress would still be able to provide the reward.
If not, this job would be a massive loss.
However, Li Yela looked at the silver bell in his hand.
This was his trophy, a psionic armament taken from the corpse of that old man, Wang De.
Even though it was a bell, it made no sound no matter how he shook it.
It seemed it needed a bit of psionic energy.
He wondered where Wang De's psionic power came from. Was it granted by the Ghost Immortal, or someone else?
After a moment of thought, Li Yela meditated to check his remaining psionic reserves, then guided the energy into the bell.
He gave it a gentle shake, and a crisp ringing sound echoed.
In the next second, the Dual-Blade Knight in silver-gray plate armor appeared beside him.
The knight knelt on one knee before Li Yela, awaiting orders.
Looking at the knight before him, Li Yela smiled.
"It seems it wasn't a total loss after all."
