The Underworld's Countercurrent
Chapter 10: Have You Ever Seen a Spear Technique Like This, Falling From the Heavens?
Years later, facing a calamity capable of overturning the entire Great City, everyone present would remember that evening.
The afterglow of the sunset was ultimately obscured by the Great City’s high walls; shadows eroded the remaining sunlight, plunging the entire city into night.
Under the dim light, facing a monster that felt like a natural predator, everyone was suppressed by instinctive fear, unable to move or make a sound. They could only watch helplessly as the monster stepped closer to the girl, opening its blood-filled maw as if to swallow her whole.
But in this desperate situation, that man erupted with a monstrous fighting spirit that startled the beast, as if an entire army had descended upon the scene.
He forcibly diverted the monster's attention away from the girl.
His terrifying double pupils looked down at the monster from a position of superiority, and he uttered words that struck at the heart.
At that moment, no one knew what he was thinking; only the monster’s roar echoed through the building!
Then, the scarlet blade transformed into a streak of light, lunging straight at him!
That man was, naturally, Li Yelan. Just like everyone else present, he felt the fear when facing a predatory monster, his entire body stiffening.
This was a monster summoned from the Void through special means—a creature even more dangerous than the awakened victims of the same level, a natural enemy to life in the physical world.
But compared to the others, Li Yelan’s situation was slightly better.
Having previously assumed the mission was over, Li Yelan had already reached the room's entrance to escape this nauseating crime scene. He only needed one more step to leave.
Compared to the others, he had a greater chance of survival.
But at that moment, he hesitated.
He knew very well that if he left, with one more esper missing, everyone here would likely be killed by this monster. At the very least, Cheese, who was already face-to-face with the beast, would be unable to escape that fate.
In truth, Li Yelan had only known Cheese for two days; he couldn't say he was very familiar with this beautiful senior. And as for the others, he had only met them today.
*Run!*
In this situation, even if he ran, no one would blame him. He could survive.
But remembering the girl he failed to save yesterday, and Cheese and the others who were just joking around with him, Li Yelan fell into silence once more.
Was he really going to run away like this? Abandon everything and flee in a panic?
Let this inhuman monster cause even more casualties in the city before reinforcements arrived?
*Fight!* It wasn't as if they lacked the power to fight! They were just paralyzed by instinctive fear. If they could suppress that fear and coordinate their actions, they could definitely defeat the monster!
But... he might very well die.
The monster’s speed was too fast, and it possessed psionic weaponry. Hadn't Xinghuo had his arm severed in the very first instant?
And himself... could he really survive the first attack? Could he really hold out until the others reacted and reinforcements arrived?
The two choices left Li Yelan in a brief struggle.
But the next instant, he decisively wiped his face!
*Activate ability: Overlord Mask!*
Li Yelan chuckled inwardly. Why was he hesitating?
Didn't he still have a trump card?
Any subsequent risks and potential death would be paid for by the "Shadow," Lord Ying!
That’s right, Li Yelan had decided: if it came to the point of death, he would trade with the Shadow again! At the cost of one chain, he would save everyone here and many more lives!
In a trance, Li Yelan heard laughter. Whether it was approval or mockery, he didn't care. Looking at the monster rushing toward him, Li Yelan, having shed all fear, laughed loudly and drew his blade and axe!
The collision of the scarlet blade and the steel axe sparked brilliantly.
Li Yelan retreated several steps, but he had blocked the first strike!
He felt a sharp pain in the web of his right hand, but without hesitation, he slashed out with the steel blade in his left hand, meeting the monster’s second strike!
He had already seen several black lines on the monster’s body—those were its weak points! If he could land a strike along those lines, the monster would be dead or crippled!
However, there weren't many black lines on the psionic weapon; it seemed the idea of breaking its weapon in one blow would have to be shelved for now.
That didn't matter!
Li Yelan let out a deafening roar, his steel axe and blade dancing rapidly. It was as if he had returned to the battlefield, transformed into the Overlord of Western Chu, wielding his precious sword to slaughter the hundreds of soldiers surrounding him!
His combat techniques were improving rapidly!
Light blade to bait the enemy, heavy axe to break defenses.
Steel axe for defense, steel blade for surprise attacks.
Fighting with both hands, attacking from both sides!
In less than three seconds, their weapons clashed fiercely over a dozen times. Blade light and sparks flew.
At the same time, some strange force was influencing the battle. The wobbling ceiling light suddenly crashed down toward Li Yelan. Li Yelan stepped back just in time, and the monster, lunging forward, was struck squarely by the light. Arcs and sparks flickered against its psionic barrier.
A cabinet that had been bumped earlier was teetering; it toppled over as Li Yelan passed, but he sensed it in advance and retreated again, letting the monster take the impact of the wardrobe.
This was Li Yelan’s curse, or rather, his "Lucky E." After activating his ability, everything around him would lean toward some form of misfortune, resulting in coincidental accidents. If he were on the road, a car would probably lose control and head straight for him.
But right now, these "accidents" had become the means for Li Yelan to deal with the monster!
He was very confident in his Lucky E; what might usually be a random accident had now become an absolute certainty. And as long as he sensed it in advance and dodged, the monster chasing him didn't have that reaction.
Thus, when the monster, surprised, slashed through the falling wardrobe, Li Yelan seized the opportunity. He hooked the monster's long blade with his axe and, while leaning in, slashed out with his steel blade.
*Rip!* The monster’s ear was sliced clean off. It was wounded!
The monster felt the first sense of fear and anger since its birth. It actually abandoned its stuck long blade, grabbed Li Yelan’s left hand with both of its own, and opened that mouth full of sharp fangs, biting down toward Li Yelan’s neck.
Li Yelan’s heart skipped a beat. He pressed the long blade down with his right-hand axe and swung it hard into the monster’s face, but it was caught in the monster's jaws. Even the axe showed signs of twisting and cracking—the bite force was terrifying!
One bite and he would surely die!
But Li Yelan calmed his heart. He decisively abandoned the axe, kicked up, and caught the long blade the monster had discarded. It was a polearm, meant to be held with two hands, but in Li Yelan’s grip, it erupted with unimaginable intimidation.
At that moment, a look of terror appeared in the monster’s eyes.
Because, as Li Yelan held the scarlet blade with one hand, the aura of slaughter on him became increasingly terrifying. It was as if he would pierce through its flesh in the next second.
The monster’s feeling was not wrong.
Li Yelan was currently using the Overlord Mask, and the Overlord of Western Chu was always most skilled with polearms like halberds and spears.
With a one-handed "Eighteen Thrusts" combined with the double pupils' ability to see weak points, who could stand against him?
From start to finish, Li Yelan had only wanted to snatch the monster’s weapon.
A streak of scarlet pierced the monster’s chest. The monster let out a terrified roar and decisively let go, retreating. It was extremely fast, dodging what should have been a fatal blow, but its shoulder was still torn open. Foul-smelling blood flowed down.
However, at that very instant, a voice rang out.
"[Listen to me] Cardiac arrest!"
The monster’s body swayed, its pupils blurring.
The next instant, a large hammer was shoved directly into its mouth and twisted. A massive force erupted inside its mouth—*crunch, crunch*. Most of its sharp fangs were shattered!
It was Cheese and Heavy Cavalry; they had finally suppressed their instinctive fear after Li Yelan made his move and reached out to help him!
"Are you okay?" Heavy Cavalry stood beside Li Yelan, wielding her twin hammers. Her face was pale, but her eyes were fixed firmly on the monster.
Cheese, holding a dagger and swallowing a handful of candy, came up behind Li Yelan and Heavy Cavalry.
"Thanks," Cheese whispered.
"It's nothing..." Li Yelan stroked the scarlet blade the monster had dropped, a smile appearing on his face. "Let's finish it together!"
The monster, which had been knocked back several meters, instantly regained its senses and charged straight toward the corpses of the animal-masked men. It grabbed a horse-masked corpse and bit down, crushing the skull and letting the blood flow into its mouth.
The next instant, its wounds began to heal, and its fangs grew back one by one. Its body even became more robust, transforming from a youth into a prime adult.
It was a Void creature summoned through a special ritual; as long as it devoured enough flesh and blood, its body would grow rapidly and become even stronger!
The next second, a wisp of flame suddenly appeared on the monster’s face, instantly turning into a sea of fire, igniting all the corpses around it.
It was Xinghuo!
In the distance, he was clutching his severed arm, his eyes bloodshot, but he had defiantly activated his ability: "Eat, eat, eat! Let's see you eat more, you bastard!"
His sister, Yingliu, and the Detective stood before him, their faces deathly pale, staring fixedly at the monster.
The other espers joined the battle!
The monster immediately abandoned the corpses and leaped out of the flames, looking at the group with vigilance.
Li Yelan, however, strode forward, swinging the scarlet blade—it felt excellent in his hand!
It was time to show this thing what a one-handed "Eighteen Thrusts" was!
Since entering the battle, Li Yelan’s combat skills had grown rapidly. The echoes of Overlord Xiang Yu’s final battle allowed him to quickly master techniques he hadn't been proficient in. If the fight continued, he might soon grasp the true one-handed "Eighteen Thrusts."
Seeing Li Yelan approach, the now-stronger monster began to retreat. The fear Li Yelan instilled in it grew stronger; its instincts were driving it to flee immediately.
Thus, when Li Yelan and Heavy Cavalry closed to within ten meters, it suddenly exploded into motion, slamming headlong into the nearest window.
It was trying to break through the window and escape!
The espers were stunned but immediately launched their attacks. Xinghuo controlled the flames to block the window.
"[Listen to me] Cardiac arrest!" Cheese shouted, but the monster only swayed slightly before charging into the flames, shattering the window, and escaping the room.
When everyone rushed to the window, they only saw it, wreathed in flames, accelerating in mid-air like a meteor, rushing toward the apartment building opposite.
On the street, many pedestrians saw this scene and looked up at the flames in the sky in shock.
"Damn it!" Cheese was horrified. If this monster rushed into the crowd, heaven knows how many victims there would be. And relying on its ability to devour flesh, this monster would grow to an unimaginable level!
In normal times, the handlers would just chase it down and surround it. But the espers present were all rookies and hadn't mastered the psionic technique of "Air-Stepping."
On the scene, only Cheese could pursue it. But what good would it do if she chased it alone?
"Damn it, I should have taught them Air-Stepping first!"
Just as Cheese climbed out the window, ready to pursue, she saw Li Yelan step onto the window ledge. He took a deep breath and leaped down!
"Are you crazy?" Cheese’s face turned pale. She had only taught Li Yelan the technique for Air-Stepping; he hadn't even trained it yet! How could he just jump like that? An esper would die from a fall at this height!
However, the next second, her expression stiffened.
On the other side, below the apartment building, the Instructor was in a sorry state, his long sword already snapped.
But he still drove the broken blade into the Goat-Headed Man’s chest, twisting it to snap the creature's cervical spine, completely dismantling its combat capability.
"You really are strong, but... what can you change? Up there, it’s probably already a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood. I’ll give you this body of mine," the Goat-Headed Man laughed.
This made the Instructor’s heart sink. The Goat-Headed Man before him was just a body controlled by the other party. The real person was still hiding in some corner, coldly observing everything.
Both were of the Divine Control path. The Instructor could control flying swords from a distance, but the Goat-Headed Man could control prepared corpses. It was too disadvantageous to fight without finding the main body.
Moreover, the aura above was very strange, and Cheese and the others were still in danger. He couldn't be delayed by this guy any longer.
The only good news was that reinforcements were almost there. He could already see their figures Air-Stepping from afar.
However, the next second, the Goat-Headed Man’s laughter stopped abruptly. His voice was full of disbelief: "How is this possible..."
After the Instructor kicked his neck to break it, he also looked up suddenly.
He saw a bizarre scene.
A flaming meteor flew out of the apartment. Behind it, someone holding a large blade stepped seven times in mid-air.
He caught up to the flaming meteor, and then the large blade slashed down!
The next second, the meteor fell, crashing heavily onto a black SUV not far from the Instructor.
The terrifying red-skinned, sharp-fanged monster let out an inhuman roar, struggling to crawl off the car.
However, a voice rang out from mid-air.
"Have you ever seen this spear technique that descends from the heavens?"
In an instant, a figure descended from the sky. The scarlet blade thrust down fiercely, piercing the monster’s head along with the SUV in a single blow!
The monster’s roar ceased abruptly.
And what the Instructor and the arriving reinforcements saw was a figure walking out of the raging fire. He stepped on the monster’s corpse, holding the scarlet blade, and after glancing calmly at the completely totaled black SUV with his terrifying double pupils, he couldn't help but gasp.
"Holy shit, that’s Cheese’s new car!"
