Chapter 42: Is That Okay?
The next day was Sunday, finally bringing a day where one could sleep until waking naturally.
Lu Nanting left his room in high spirits, only to hear Gu Lanxi on the phone, her tone uncharacteristically fierce
"That bastard! He really deserves to be sent to prison!"
Everything had been perfectly fine last night.
Once she hung up, Lu Nanting hurriedly asked, "What happened?"
Gu Lanxi said huffily
"Doesn't my studio sit right across from another small company? The boss across the street keeps pouring boiling water on my Money Trees. He's already killed several of them before, and he refuses to admit it. I went over yesterday to get two new ones, and while I was at it, I installed high-definition pinhole cameras on both trees. Early this morning, the studio reported that they caught him on film. This time, I am definitely not letting him off!"
No wonder she had finished her physical exam yesterday morning and didn't return until nearly dark.
She really had gone off to do something big!
Lu Nanting listened, dumbfounded: "I always thought that was just an internet joke..."
Gu Lanxi was furious: "This isn't about whether it's a 'Money Tree' or not, okay? Even if they were just ordinary greenery, they are *mine*! Mine, okay?!"
Seeing that whenever she got angry, she loved to pepper her speech with all sorts of modal particles, making her incredibly adorable, Lu Nanting suppressed a laugh and quickly changed his tune: "Who is this boss? So ill-mannered? Let's scold him together!"
"He's just a clown! Don't bother! He's been pulling these little stunts time and again; scolding him is a waste of time! I'm going to send him to eat prison food!"
Damaging someone else's property with conclusive evidence and a significant amount would indeed lead to a prison sentence.
But...
"Aren't Money Trees only a few dozen yuan each? That shouldn't be enough to go to prison, right?"
"That depends on what kind of Money Tree it is! If you buy the same dress from a street stall versus a custom-made one from France, would the prices be the same?!"
Waking up early to encounter such a thing had left Gu Lanxi feeling incredibly frustrated!
As the saying goes, "cutting someone's path to wealth is like killing their parents." To her, anyone trying to ruin her financial luck was a more serious offense than killing her own father! It was an absolute "fight to the death" kind of relationship!
Recalling that their studio and the Group had ordered greenery through a landscaping company—where they only had to pay a small annual rental fee—Lu Nanting's voice lowered slightly
"How much did your 'Money Tree babies' cost?"
Seeing his sincere inquiry, Gu Lanxi finally told him: "I specifically made an appointment with a Feng Shui master to fetch them. The trees cost 3,000 yuan, and the Feng Shui master's red envelope was 16,888 yuan. Totaling 19,888 yuan. Everything has an invoice; Lawyer Liang will send someone over to collect them later."
"You can get an invoice for hiring a Feng Shui master?"
Lu Nanting admitted he wasn't skilled in business; he was truly gaining new perspectives by following his wife!
"It's a transaction widely recognized by the market. It's a mutual agreement, so it's naturally legal. Besides, that gentleman is a legitimate businessman registered under a Feng Shui consulting company. We are processing this through the corporate account, so don't categorize this as feudal superstition."
When running a business, who wouldn't want a bit of good luck?
Many times, many things were truly better to believe in if they existed.
It didn't cost that much money, after all.
If things went wrong because of this, the loss would outweigh the gain.
Lu Nanting was deeply impressed. Before he could organize his thoughts, Gu Lanxi's phone rang.
It was Lawyer Liang calling.
Being a fellow Cantonese, Liang Shizhao could empathize deeply with this "vicious" case, so he intended to handle it personally.
The two began a serious discussion about the lawsuit. Seeing that he couldn't help, Lu Nanting took the initiative to go to the dining room to prepare for breakfast.
Gu Lanxi had woken up early and had already eaten. Seeing him up, Auntie Wang immediately served him a bowl of seafood porridge.
"It's hot out, so I've prepared some cold cucumber to go with the porridge."
To his surprise, there was a small plate of cold side dishes alongside the porridge.
Lu Nanting thanked her and, while eating, kept his ears pricked to listen to Gu Lanxi handling the matter.
This was entirely novel to him; he wanted to know how the lawsuit would eventually be ruled.
After all, a Money Tree wouldn't die immediately just from being poured with boiling water; gathering evidence would likely be quite troublesome.
Seeing him eating, Gu Lanxi didn't disturb him. After discussing the next steps with Lawyer Liang, she went to the gym to practice boxing.
By the time she finished, drenched in sweat, and came out to hydrate, her phone rang again.
This time, it was Li Jingxiu arranging a transaction.
The funds had already been raised.
Since tomorrow was Monday, the Administration for Market Regulation would only be open then, and the procedures for the transfer of shares among shareholders would need to be completed.
The two agreed to meet at the Administration at 9:00 AM tomorrow. After hanging up, Gu Lanxi called Liang Shizhao again.
The Money Tree matter could be set aside for a moment; she had to get this transaction done first.
She had notified the lawyer, but she also needed to notify the studio staff.
Going out to handle big business alone with just a lawyer felt too lonely; she couldn't do every little chore herself.
The previous meal had only reached a preliminary intention; the specifics still needed to be implemented into a contract. All eight members of her studio were elites, more than capable of handling any situation.
Having discussed this matter previously, she had already informed her employees. Even though it was the weekend, they hadn't been idle.
Various materials and documents had been prepared in exhaustive detail.
With the boss cashing out 200 million, would there be a major move next?
Fei Yunxiao and the others were eager to get involved, but they felt a bit of regret upon learning the boss only wanted to buy a new house to live in.
Gu Lanxi didn't care much about what they thought; she only wanted to push the transaction through smoothly.
Since the transaction wasn't completely finalized, she wouldn't tell Gu Yongxin and her daughter, lest a sudden change occur and the deal be pushed back, leaving them with nothing but false hope.
"By the way, I'll have the property management send some cardboard boxes over in a bit. Since we're rarely free like this, let's go upstairs, pack your things, and quietly move them downstairs. Then we can move them away along with my things later."
"Mm. Right now, everyone outside thinks I'm not staying here. If I call people from the old residence to pack luggage and they find out I'm moving, the paparazzi might follow us."
Lu Nanting strongly agreed with Gu Lanxi's arrangement.
There was no need to move pots and pans; they were just moving personal items, so it wouldn't be particularly exhausting.
To avoid prying eyes, mixing their luggage together was the best approach.
Gu Lanxi had done all sorts of chores since she was a child, so she naturally didn't think much of it.
But Lu Nanting had no intention of letting her do heavy lifting
"Don't get involved in the moving later; leave it to me. Put valuables in boxes. Is your safe big enough?"
"The load-bearing capacity of the high-rise is limited, so the safe isn't large. It's already stuffed full."
"We'll put a few more in the house later."
"Mm."
The two consulted each other and worked with great efficiency.
Almost all the neighbors in the building had multiple residences and moved things from time to time. During seasonal changes, they also needed to pack away out-of-season clothing, so the property management kept a large stock of cardboard boxes on hand.
Gu Lanxi called the property management directly, and in less than ten minutes, the butler led the staff up to deliver the boxes.
Once the property staff left, the two immediately went to the storage room to find a trolley, then quietly wheeled the boxes upstairs.
"The security team caught several paparazzi trying to sneak in yesterday, so there shouldn't be anyone today."
Since it was Sunday, families with children were out playing, and those without children had mostly gone to their companies. There weren't many people using the elevator in the late morning.
"Even though it's daytime, let's still be careful. Don't turn on the lights."
Lu Nanting obediently complied, pulled the trolley into the elevator, and went to open the door first.
Many of his personal belongings were at the old residence; this place only held his frequently worn clothes, jewelry, bags, and shoes, along with some documents for easy access and his musical instruments.
The two packed in silence. Even though they were in their own home, they felt like thieves.
"No matter what industry you're in, there are pros and cons. Since you've chosen this path, don't complain about life being inconvenient."
Lu Nanting was packing when he suddenly heard Gu Lanxi comforting him, and he couldn't help but smile
"That's why it wasn't easy for me to find a wife. I have to treat you well, lest you run away."
She was always like this—clearly talking about something serious, but somehow drifting into something improper!
Gu Lanxi glared at him and turned back to her work.
After a long while, she whispered a reply: "Mm, I'll try my best this time."
In the walk-in closet, half the clothes were packed. A dozen watch boxes sat in the middle of a tea-brown glass cabinet. Lu Nanting put down the tape in his hand and chuckled
"Things aren't like they used to be. If you run again, I'll catch you and bring you back!"
He was long past the age of needing promises to feel secure.
Nor would he doubt her love for him just because she wasn't fond of sweet words.
Compared to speaking, he preferred acting.
