The Crazy Mother and Daughter's Counterattack in the Era
Chapter 38: Just Because I Look Innocent Doesn't Mean I'm Easy to Bully
"Comrade Leng, Comrade Leng, I've finally been waiting for you today."
"Are you crazy? Why did you suddenly rush out like that?"
"Comrade Leng, I know what I'm doing." The handlebars were grabbed.
Leng Yongkang realized he recognized the person blocking his bicycle.
It was Song Zhishan, the women's director of their neighborhood committee.
"Director Song, are you sick? Rushing out like this without a word—I'm afraid you'll get hit, and I'm scared!"
He was truly shaken, and his heart was still racing; he just hoped he wouldn't have nightmares tonight.
Song Zhishan waved her hand. "Comrade Leng, don't be angry yet. I've been waiting for you all day. I have something to discuss with you."
"What is it?" Leng Yongkang's tone was unpleasant.
"It's like this: your wife has been wanting a divorce. My suggestion is for you and her to come to the neighborhood committee together to state your position to me. If it is truly after deep consideration that you still wish to separate, I will issue the certificate for you."
After listening for a long while, Leng Yongkang was still in a fog, not understanding her meaning.
"Director Song, do you mean you want me to bring Xiao Lin to the neighborhood committee to see you tomorrow?"
Song Zhishan nodded. "Yes, you two come together tomorrow. However... if I ask how you have considered it, you must express that you do not wish to separate."
Leng Yongkang blinked. "Do not wish to separate?"
"Exactly. As long as you do not wish to separate, I won't issue the certificate tomorrow. And without the certificate, you two won't have to divorce. Isn't that wonderful?"
A happy ending for everyone.
"What is with that expression? You look more miserable than if you were crying," Song Zhishan said, bewildered.
If they couldn't divorce, it should be what the man wanted. Why couldn't she tell if Leng Yongkang was happy or not?
Leng Yongkang wailed inwardly. He wanted to smile happily, to smile with triumph, but this wasn't a private conspiracy between the two of them; there was a "little villainous ancestor" hiding right there on the scene.
A small head poked out from behind Leng Yongkang's back. Leng Hui smiled and waved at Song Zhishan. "Hello, Comrade Song Zhishan. Long time no see. You've given me quite a surprise upon seeing you."
The expression on Song Zhishan's face shifted from bewilderment to embarrassment so quickly that her facial muscles twitched uncontrollably, crackling like an overloaded circuit about to short-circuit.
"You... how are you here?"
Leng Hui laughed out of pure anger. "If I weren't here, how would I know that Director Song is so dedicated to scheming against my mother? If I weren't here, how would I know that your 'service to the people' is so selfless that you'd forget to eat and sleep just to block Comrade Leng Yongkang right here?"
"What? You didn't take the warning from the other day seriously, did you? You thought we were just talking?"
Song Zhishan's old face flushed bright red. She waved her hands dismissively. "No, you've misunderstood. Everything I do is for your own good..."
"I'll thank your ancestors for that! The 'good' you speak of is something my mother and I cannot afford! Now, right now, go to the neighborhood committee and issue the certificate!"
Leng Hui's expression turned stern. She jumped off the back seat, stepped forward, grabbed Song Zhishan by the wrist, and began dragging her toward the neighborhood committee.
"Oh! Let's talk this through!" Song Zhishan tried to pry the fingers off her wrist.
"There's nothing to talk about. My dad happens to be here today, so why wait? We're going to get the certificate right now."
This was the first time Leng Yongkang had seen Leng Hui looking so fierce and menacing; he hurriedly pushed the bicycle to follow.
"Huihui, don't get agitated. Let's talk this out calmly."
"Stop nagging and hurry up. We're getting this done today." Leng Hui shot him a glare, warning him to stay quiet.
Sometimes, if you speak too politely, people think you're soft and easy to bully, picking on you like a ripe persimmon.
It was the peak hour for people leaving work and school, so the streets were crowded. Song Zhishan wanted to call for help from passersby.
However, sensing her intention, Leng Hui warned, "I suggest you behave and come back to the neighborhood committee to issue the certificate. If you try to pull any more tricks, I won't mind having a good chat with everyone about your recent behavior!"
By the time the three arrived at the neighborhood committee, most of the staff had already left for the day, leaving only two people cleaning.
Seeing Director Song and the other two storm into the office, the two remaining staff members looked at each other in confusion.
This time, issuing the certificate went very smoothly.
Once Leng Hui had the certificate in hand, she sat on the desk and lightly patted her own cheek. "If you had been this obedient earlier, we wouldn't have had all this trouble. Remember, thinking you are doing something good for others isn't always true kindness. Only the foot knows if the shoe fits. Don't let superficial glamour blind you!"
Looking at Leng Hui, who acted like a gang leader, Song Zhishan felt indignant but dared not speak.
Her wrist, which had been dragged all the way, was now numb with pain.
At this moment, she was trembling uncontrollably under the desk.
*Such a young girl, yet so ruthless.*
As they left the neighborhood committee, Leng Yongkang saw that Leng Hui was still inspecting the certificate. He protested in a low voice, "I haven't even agreed yet, and you've already had it issued."
Leng Hui acted as if she hadn't heard him, urging him to ride faster. She wanted to get home and share the joy with Tang Lin.
As soon as the father and daughter entered the residential compound, they saw Tang Lin sitting on a stone bench by the road, waving at them.
"Huihui, come over here."
Leng Hui hopped off the bicycle and told Leng Yongkang to go inside first.
"Ms. Tang Lin, how is it that after only one day apart, you are so impatient to see me?"
When Leng Hui approached, Tang Lin gave her a hard pat, pulled her down to sit, and whispered, "I have good news for you."
"What good news?"
Tang Lin looked left and right to ensure no one was around, then said with uncontrollable joy, "My superpower is back!"
Leng Hui's heart leaped. "Really?"
"Of course. I was feeling bored today and wandering around the courtyard. I discovered a decades-old camphor tree at the very end of the compound. I wanted to try and sense the essence of its greenery, and I didn't expect to succeed on the first try." Tang Lin could not hide her excitement.
After so many days of transmigrating, her body was slowly recovering, and now her superpower had returned. Today was truly a day of double blessings.
"Congratulations!"
"Congratulations to us both!" Tang Lin laughed foolishly.
"I also have a piece of good news to share with you today."
"What is it?"
"Ta-da!" Leng Hui pulled the divorce certificate from her pocket. "I just got this back from the neighborhood committee today."
"So you caught Director Song today?" Tang Lin took the paper. Seeing the official seal on it, she felt relieved.
"She delivered herself to my door."
Leng Hui told Tang Lin everything that had happened that afternoon. Thinking back on it, she couldn't help but laugh. "You should have seen Song Zhishan's face at the end. It was absolutely hideous."
"Aren't you afraid she'll hold a grudge against you?" Tang Lin returned the certificate to her, speaking helplessly.
Due to habits formed in the apocalypse, the mother and daughter kept all supplies and important documents with Leng Hui. Because they were kept in her spatial dimension, they were safer than anywhere else.
"It's useless if she holds a grudge; I'm not asking her for any favors," Leng Hui said disdainfully.
Tang Lin reminded her, "Don't forget, by next year, if you still haven't found a job, you'll have to follow the neighborhood committee's arrangements and go to the countryside for re-education."
"Where did you hear that?"
"The women in the compound chat about job issues. I heard it from them."
Leng Hui shrugged, adopting a "let it be" attitude. "There will be a way when the time comes. There's no use worrying now. If I have to go to the countryside, I'll deal with it when that day arrives."
