The competitive witch never admits defeat.
Chapter 7: 7. Chapter 7: The Gluttonous Vasita
Chapter 7: Gluttonous Vasida
"All first-year students, come and collect your 'Freshman Guide.'
Second-year students and above, remember to check your 'Academic Year Plan' in your Witch Books.
As per the usual rules, there are no scheduled classes for the next three days. Please read the 'Freshman Guide' or 'Academic Year Plan' carefully. The official curriculum for this academic year will begin in three days."
Ms. Amisha brought out a stack of booklets, and each first-year little witch received one.
The upperclassmen, meanwhile, had produced large books from somewhere and were looking down, flipping through them.
The higher the grade, the thicker the book in their hands.
Before they could even begin reading their booklets, Ms. Amisha instructed all the little witches to step back and lean against the walls.
Five long tables laden with delicacies appeared in the center of the open space.
"Alright, the banquet begins! Especially for you first-year freshmen, enjoy this meal to your heart's content!"
Ms. Amisha flashed a meaningful smile, and then her figure gradually faded, disappearing from the hall.
The next moment, everyone was free to speak.
However, the upperclassmen didn't seem to have any interest in talking; they all rushed toward the dining tables in unison.
Even Senior Lilith abandoned her junior witches.
They were quite orderly, with one table per grade; no one crossed paths or fought for space.
This left the first-year little witches standing in place, looking utterly bewildered.
Only one freshman moved even faster than the seniors. She had charged toward the dining table like a small cannonball and had already begun eating voraciously.
With her and the seniors setting the example, the confused freshmen followed suit, running toward the first-year table.
Moran watched the freshman who had bolted out first.
That tiny body was eating with the ferocity of a glutton.
Who else could it be but the "socially anxious" Vasida?
Moran felt her previous judgment might have been wrong.
A socially anxious person would never do something as conspicuous as being the first to break ranks.
The child looked as if she hadn't eaten for a month.
Furthermore, Ms. Amisha had just left like that? Without any instructions or arrangements, the freshmen had nothing but their "Freshman Guides." They didn't even know where they were staying tonight.
This was far too much freedom!
"Student Moran, let's go eat as well!" Sylph invited after a moment of hesitation.
Currently, only the two of them were still standing still.
"Alright!" Moran pulled her thoughts back and walked toward the first-year table with Sylph.
At this moment, there was only one seat left on either side of Vasida.
Vasida ate like a whirlwind, her speed somewhat terrifying. When they had greeted each other earlier, she had seemed very reclusive, and the other little witches hadn't dared to sit near her.
Moran and Sylph, however, didn't mind and sat down beside Vasida.
"Moran, here! This lamb chop is delicious!"
Ais returned with a plate piled high with roasted lamb chops. Seeing Moran sitting next to her, she happily shared them.
The lamb chops were at the other end of the long table, somewhat far from them, making them difficult to reach.
The lamb chops did indeed look very appetizing.
"Thank you!" Moran didn't stand on ceremony; she hadn't eaten dinner and was indeed quite hungry.
She had a deep impression of Ais.
Ais had outstanding talent in fire elements and cooking magic, while her talent in other magical disciplines was mediocre.
She was also the only freshman in this batch with a sophisticated understanding of gourmet food.
Her mother was a gourmet witch, so she came from a long lineage of culinary expertise. She had eaten countless delicacies since childhood and had learned some cooking techniques even before touching magic.
However, while Ais's mother specialized in desserts, Ais was particularly interested in meat cookery.
Her school robe pockets were bulging, stuffed with salted meat cubes she had made herself.
They were square-shaped and neatly wrapped in parchment paper, looking like little candies.
Even the seemingly reclusive Vasida was moved by Ais's meat "candies"; her "thank you" was several decibels louder than the other little witches.
Moran trusted Ais's palate.
She cut a piece of lamb chop and put it in her mouth. Her eyes instantly lit up. "Delicious!"
"Right? It's crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and has a very special aroma. I wonder what spices were used!"
Ais pondered the recipe while she ate.
Moran felt that the lamb chops seemed to have the scent of cumin.
Mama Shana was also skilled in culinary magic and had a fairly complete collection of gourmet utensils and spices; she basically had everything common.
But cumin had never appeared in her spice box.
It was evident that cumin was likely not a common spice in Valen.
In Valen, where powerful individuals frequently traveled to other worlds through the Sky Well, it wouldn't be surprising for new things to emerge.
Even if this truly was cumin, perhaps it had a different name in Valen.
Therefore, Moran did not voice her guess.
After finishing the lamb chop, Moran declined Ais's offer for another piece; she wanted to try other things on the table.
Though, in Ais's words, nothing else could compare to the roasted lamb chops.
Moran discovered that as long as one portion of the delicacies on the table was eaten, a new one would appear; they never seemed to run out.
Beside her, Vasida had been eating honey bread one after another since she sat down, yet the bread in her basket remained piled high.
After burying her head in roughly a hundred small breads, Vasida finally stopped, looked up, and let out a deep sigh of relief.
By chance, her eyes met the gaze of the witch sitting opposite her, and Vasida gave a friendly smile.
At this smile, the little witch opposite her dropped her chicken leg in shock.
Vasida: "..."
She knew her recent behavior was very much like a weirdo, but she couldn't help herself!
Fortunately, she still had two companions: "Moran! Sylph! In your daily lives, was there anything about you that was different from ordinary little witches?"
Her voice was full of vigor; where was the social anxiety from before?
Not just Moran and Sylph, but all the little witches nearby who heard her spoke were jaw-dropped.
"Um... I really didn't mean it earlier, I was just so hungry. It's a good thing I didn't faint during the entrance ceremony... Please don't misunderstand, I'm really, truly not reclusive at all. Usually, I'm very easy to get along with, except when I'm starving..."
Vasida explained hurriedly.
"So, the reason your voice was so quiet when you greeted everyone earlier was because you were too hungry to speak?"
Although the answer was somewhat absurd, Moran felt it might actually be the truth.
She had been paying attention to the seemingly socially anxious Vasida. If she were extremely hungry, it would explain why Vasida's voice had been as quiet as a mosquito earlier but was now so full of energy.
She had probably finally eaten her fill.
Although the honey bread in the basket hadn't diminished, Vasida had already devoured many of them.
