The Beautiful Beauty of the 1980s Compound

Chapter 4: He Can Actually Understand What I'm Saying?

Lu Qiaoge picked up a small fish the size of a thumb and took a bite. It was truly fragrant, and the crispness was simply incredible.

Lu Qiaoge felt hungrier than a cat.

She had come from the apocalypse.

Although she had lived well thanks to her supernatural abilities, food had still been scarce.

Since transmigrating to this moment, she hadn't eaten a single proper meal.

On the dining table sat a basin of small fish, a basin of steamed white buns that Old Lu had brought back from the cafeteria, and her sister-in-law had just brought out a basin of tomato and egg soup from the kitchen.

Although there were barely any eggs to be seen, it was sprinkled with bright green scallions.

Lu Qiaoge grabbed a few small fish and a bun. Ignoring Meng Xia’s scolding behind her, she walked straight out of the courtyard and stood under a tree. She shook the crispy dried fish in her hand and said to the tabby cat in the tree, "You said you were hungry just now. Come down; I’ll treat you to some fish and buns."

The tabby cat was puzzled: [When did I ever tell you, a human, that I was hungry?]

Lu Qiaoge: "Just now."

The tabby cat still hadn't realized: [I said I was hungry, but you can't understand me.]

Lu Qiaoge: "I understood you. By the way, I also want to thank you for the information you provided me on the wall of the staff hospital..."

The tabby cat froze. The next second, its fur stood on end as it shrieked wildly: [Ahhh, meow meow meow, you... you human can actually understand what I’m saying?]

Then, it fell off the tree with a thud.

Lu Qiaoge was quick-witted; she scooped the cat up in one motion. Seeing no one around, she grabbed the cat by the scruff of its neck and ducked behind her house.

A moment later, the tabby cat was rolling around happily, munching on the fish while curiously eyeing this human.

So, this human could understand everything it thought.

Was she a little fairy?

Lu Qiaoge smiled: "Do a few things for me, and I’ll raise you from now on."

[Do what things? Does your house have big rats that need catching?] the tabby cat asked excitedly.

Cats in this era didn't have cat food, but they had a proper profession: catching rats.

Lu Qiaoge whispered a few words to it, dropped the bun and dried fish, and went back home.

The tabby cat was extremely happy.

It felt like a cat favored by the heavens; who knew, maybe one day it could even cultivate into a human.

Hiding the leftover food at the Lu house, the tabby cat ran off in the direction of the Zhao house.

In the afternoon, Lu Qiaoge didn't go directly to find Sun Qin, but instead went to the family quarters of the Military Industrial Research Institute.

The 516 Military Factory had a massive system; not only did it have mines and an affiliated steel mill, but it also had a research institute.

Lu Qiaoge politely asked the guard: "Hello, is my fourth uncle, Lu Cheng, in? I have something to discuss with him."

The guard nodded and made a phone call. Before long, Lu Cheng walked out quickly.

Lu Qiaoge pulled him to the side of the wall. She first mentioned that although she had fallen into the water, she had been rescued in time and was fine, then asked directly: "Fourth Uncle, did you find that nanny for Director He that you mentioned a few days ago?"

Lu Cheng shook his head: "I found a few, but Director He wasn't used to the dishes they cooked, so we didn't hire them. Why are you asking about this? By the way, how did you know?"

Lu Qiaoge: "I heard people talking about it when I went to the neighborhood office to fill out a registration form yesterday."

She then told him about her discovery at the Zhao house that morning.

"...I don't like the taste of stir-fried cabbage, but Sun Qin's stir-fried cabbage smelled incredibly appetizing. She herself is clean and capable, so I’m prepared to recommend Sun Qin to you."

Lu Cheng pondered for a moment and decided to support his niece: "As long as her cooking is up to par and Director He likes it, then there’s no problem."

Director He was in her early fifties and a big shot in power machinery. She held an unshakable position in the scientific community.

She had never married and was a woman; if Sun Qin were hired, she would be a formal staff member of the logistics department.

She would be responsible for Director He’s three meals a day and daily chores.

Next to Director He’s house was a dormitory prepared for the nanny.

For Sun Qin, who was in a difficult situation, this was actually a very good choice.

But the prerequisite was that Sun Qin agreed.

And, of course, her cooking had to be up to par.

Thus, Lu Qiaoge rode the bicycle her father had left for her as temporary transport and went to the factory's logistics department.

Sun Qin was cleaning there.

Seeing that Lu Qiaoge had indeed come, she sighed.

Her parents had died early, and she had grown up in her uncle's house, where she was not only beaten and scolded but almost sold off by her aunt.

Having finally lived a few peaceful years, she didn't want to divorce at all, but Old Mrs. Zhao was threatening suicide, and Zhao Qing remained silent. She vaguely guessed that Zhao Qing seemed to have feelings for his sister-in-law.

She had suffered and hated, even felt disgusted, but she couldn't fight three people on her own.

Did those three think that if she divorced, she would take her daughter and roll back to her hometown?

No, she wouldn't let her daughter live a precarious life with her.

As long as she lived in the Zhao house for one more day, her daughter would attend school for one more day, and she would have one more day of wages.

There were so many shameless people in the world; what was she afraid of?

As long as she held out until she became a permanent employee, everything would be fine.

Before Lu Qiaoge could speak, Sun Qin said firmly: "Comrade Lu, don't try to persuade me. I will not leave the Zhao house, unless I die!"

Lu Qiaoge was startled: "It’s not that serious, Sister Sun. I came to ask if you’d like to go to the research institute to cook three meals a day for Director He. Of course, the prerequisite is that your cooking is up to par and you get hired, but if you are hired, you’ll be a formal employee, and there’s a staff dormitory..."

Sun Qin’s eyes widened suddenly, and she looked at Lu Qiaoge in disbelief.

Her breathing was rapid, and she asked in a trembling voice: "Is this true? You... you aren't just coaxing me to move out and lying to me, are you?"

Lu Qiaoge waved her hand: "Let's not talk about other things for now. If you agree, Sister Sun, we’ll go to the research institute right now."

As it turned out, Sun Qin, who could make the cabbage Lu Qiaoge hated most taste delicious and fresh, passed the test smoothly.

At this moment, the few of them were at Director He’s house.

Seeing Director He eating with relish, Lu Qiaoge couldn't help but ask curiously: "Director He, I’ve hated cabbage since I was a child, but now I want to try a bite, is that okay?"

Seeing the little girl’s smiling eyes, which were very pleasing, Director He smiled and nodded.

Lu Qiaoge took a bite and her eyes widened: "Delicious!"

There was no meat and not much oil, yet it was delicious.

It could only be called talent.

As the wife of a technician, the unit had vetted her countless times.

Therefore, Lu Cheng went directly to the factory logistics department to request her.

Before leaving, Director He called out to Lu Qiaoge: "Qiaoge, wait a moment."

Lu Qiaoge stood still obediently.

Before long, Director He handed a few books to Lu Qiaoge and said seriously: "I heard from your fourth uncle that you are unemployed at home and don't like to read. That won't do. You are so young; you cannot make getting married the only goal of your life."

She had seen this girl before, but that was when she was a child, about four years old—a small, powdery little thing, very cute.

Now, she seemed quite cute too.

Director He continued to urge: "Knowledge is never useless; you must remember this sentence."

Lu Qiaoge hurriedly took the books with both hands, her peach-blossom eyes shining brightly, and nodded vigorously while hugging the books. Books were hard to come by these days, especially the ones here.

She didn't understand why Director He gave her books, but Lu Qiaoge was very happy, and she thanked her obediently.

Director He was satisfied with her reaction, said a few gentle words, and left in a hurry.

Sun Qin looked at Lu Qiaoge with gratitude, her eyes filled with tears.

She hadn't expected that there could really be a way out of a desperate situation.

Keep supporting, babies.
