Chapter 10: Changed My Mind, Let’s Get Married

It was as good as telling him to get lost.

He Wenxun came to his senses, rubbed his neck, which was still aching, and under Lu Changzheng’s gaze, he had no choice but to take his leave.

After he left, only Lu Changzheng and Jiang Tang remained in the courtyard.

"There were meat buns at the canteen this afternoon. I bought a few back; shall we have meat buns for dinner?"

Even Lu Changzheng didn't notice that his tone was several degrees gentler than when he spoke to others.

Jiang Tang replied, "I haven't finished weaving my fence yet."

"Then I'll go stir-fry some eggs and make a soup. By the time it's ready, the fence will be finished."

Through their time together, Lu Changzheng knew Jiang Tang’s capability for manual work, so he didn't try to take over the last bit of the fence.

It was more appropriate for him to go cook.

Jiang Tang had no objections.

With great regret, she dismantled the ugly fence He Wenxun had woven, straightened out the reeds, and began weaving the fence according to her own steps.

The fence was perfectly neat; every gap and every distance looked as if it had been measured with a ruler.

Lu Changzheng finished cooking and walked out of the kitchen.

Seeing the fence standing in the courtyard, his gaze darkened slightly.

He walked over to Jiang Tang’s side.

"Go wash your hands first; leave the rest to me."

With only a little work left, Lu Changzheng finished it off.

At the dinner table, Jiang Tang was still enjoying the food immensely.

Watching someone eat with such focus, Lu Changzheng’s own appetite improved significantly.

However, thinking of the way He Wenxun had looked at Jiang Tang, Lu Changzheng’s heart sank again. He was a man; he understood the look in He Wenxun’s eyes.

It was a look of appreciation and affection from a man toward a woman.

Although the other party wouldn't do anything, that look alone was enough to make Lu Changzheng feel stifled...

And what made Lu Changzheng feel even more stifled was yet to come.

Jiang Tang actually took the initiative to talk to Lu Changzheng about He Wenxun at the dinner table.

"Is he very impressive? Treating so many people to a meal?" Her eyes were bright, her thoughts simple; she genuinely thought He Wenxun seemed like a big deal.

Lu Changzheng placed a chopstick-full of eggs into her bowl.

"Does Comrade Jiang Tang like him?"

"Like?"

Jiang Tang frowned. "Can I get enough to eat?"

Her own memories, combined with the remnants of this body’s memories, told her that not having enough to eat was a terrifying thing.

So, no matter what the matter was, the primary task for her was to ensure she could be well-fed.

Hearing this, Lu Changzheng put down his chopsticks and suddenly stood up.

"Comrade Jiang Tang."

Jiang Tang looked up and blinked, quickly swallowing the egg in her mouth. "Lu Changzheng, what’s wrong?"

"Comrade Jiang Tang, my name is Lu Changzheng. I’m almost 27, I was just promoted to Deputy Regiment Commander today, I don't drink or smoke, and I have some savings, all of which I can turn over after we marry. I will also work hard to provide for you and our home in the future."

"Will you marry me, please?"

Lu Changzheng’s voice had been incredibly loud for the first part, but by the last sentence, his volume dropped by several degrees.

Clearly, he lacked confidence.

Jiang Tang’s head was buzzing. She had to use all the experience she had gained since becoming human to understand what he meant.

"You want to have a chubby baby with me?"

"And you won't help me find anyone else?"

Jiang Tang thought for a moment, then felt something was off. "Wait, didn't you say before that you had no interest in romance?"

"It’s only been ten days, why did you change your mind?"

She wasn't teasing Lu Changzheng on purpose; she truly didn't understand why he had changed his mind.

Her experience as a human was indeed insufficient; she still couldn't grasp such profound matters.

A dark red flush crept onto Lu Changzheng’s face, especially when he met her clear, inquisitive eyes. He coughed and looked away.

But he didn't avoid the question.

"Comrade Jiang Tang, I spoke rashly before. I overestimated myself."

And underestimated her appeal.

In short, the current Lu Changzheng had decided that he didn't care if Jiang Tang laughed at him, as long as she agreed to register for marriage, anything else was fine.

If Jiang Tang were someone else, she might have deliberately made things difficult for Lu Changzheng, or perhaps been too shy to say anything at all, but Jiang Tang was not someone else.

"Will you not kick me out in the future?"

"Will there always be food to eat?"

Although Lu Changzheng was a good person, Jiang Tang couldn't help but ask a few more questions.

Lu Changzheng knew about her childhood experiences, so he nodded firmly. "I won't kick you out, and there will always be food to eat."

"I will work hard to earn money in the future so that Comrade Jiang Tang can live a better life."

"Oh!"

Jiang Tang looked thoughtful.

Just as Lu Changzheng breathed a sigh of relief, she suddenly asked, "Then when will I have a little..."

The word "ginseng" was cut off abruptly, swallowed back into her stomach.

Lu Changzheng found it somewhat amusing. "That’s called a baby, not a little person."

"Right, a baby."

Jiang Tang’s eyes lit up. "When will we have a baby?"

"Comrade Jiang Tang." Lu Changzheng was amused by her words. "Do you know how to have a baby?"

"I don't know!" Jiang Tang answered without hesitation. "But I can learn. You just have to tell me what to do, and I can do it well."

"Just like learning to swim today; Maodan told me how, and I could do it."

Jiang Tang was very confident in her learning ability.

Lu Changzheng had noticed this too.

"Was today the first time you saw them swimming?"

"Yes, I hadn't seen it before."

The little ginseng lived in the mountains; she hadn't even seen a river, so how could she have seen people swimming?

"You learned it the first time you saw it?"

He hadn't had a proper conversation with her about this topic, and now was a good time to talk about it.

Jiang Tang nodded, her eyes still filled with confusion. "Building houses, painting walls, laying tiles, and weaving fences—I only watched once for all of those."

In her view, these were no different from swimming.

Or to be more specific, all things were the same to her; as long as someone taught her, she could replicate them perfectly.

Lu Changzheng took her wrist. "Comrade Jiang Tang, come with me."

Jiang Tang was led into the room, dazed. He took a manual out of the drawer and handed it to her.

"Take a look at the content inside."

This was a very common manual at the time.

Jiang Tang opened it and looked. "I don't recognize some of these characters."

The original owner only had a junior high school education, and since Jiang Tang hadn't inherited many of her memories, she naturally couldn't recognize all the characters.

Lu Changzheng didn't need her to recognize all of them.

"I will copy a paragraph from the book. After you read it, can you help me write it down without a single mistake?"

"I can!"

Jiang Tang didn't know Lu Changzheng’s purpose, but she trusted him.

Lu Changzheng quickly copied a relatively complex quote and let Jiang Tang look at it after he finished.

She didn't spend much time before writing out an identical copy.

To what extent was it similar?

Let’s put it this way: even the places where Lu Changzheng’s fountain pen had paused and left extra ink were exactly the same in her transcription.

Lu Changzheng lowered his eyes, looking at the girl sitting beside him who was completely unaware of the implications.

Was this heaven-defying ability of hers a blessing or a curse?
