Longevity Begins with the Awakening of Superpowers
Chapter 29: Red-Light Spirit Beast
When Lu Qing heard that familiar scratching at the door, he could hardly believe his ears.
Hadn't Old Doctor Chen said his medicinal powder was extremely effective, enough to make even jackals retreat in fear?
So why was this fellow still coming?
Lu Qing felt like he was on the verge of a breakdown.
Was he going to be unable to sleep again tonight?
This couldn't go on; if he didn't settle this matter, he feared he wouldn't be able to sleep well for a long time to come.
After two consecutive nights of poor sleep, Lu Qing's temper had become somewhat irritable.
He wanted to see exactly what kind of creature had such immense audacity.
Gripping a stick by his bed, Lu Qing crept stealthily behind the main door. Suddenly, he threw back the latch and flung the door open.
This sudden movement clearly startled whatever was outside.
A dark shadow instantly bolted toward the courtyard exit.
Ever since awakening his superpower, Lu Qing's eyes had undergone certain imperceptible changes.
First, his vision had become excellent; he could see distant objects clearly.
Second, his perception of light sources had become very acute.
While he couldn't see in total darkness yet, with even a tiny bit of light, he could discern objects with seventy to eighty percent clarity.
At this moment, aided by the quite bright moonlight in the sky, Lu Qing saw clearly exactly what had been troubling him for the past two nights.
It was a small black beast.
Two feet long, it looked like a cross between a cat and a leopard, with two large eyes that glowed like lightbulbs.
Currently, the black beast's fur was somewhat puffed up, its tail was erect, and its limbs were crouched low. It was bristling with fur, watching Lu Qing warily.
After seeing the black beast's appearance, Lu Qing actually felt a sense of relief.
Fortunately, the beast didn't look very large, nor did it look particularly ferocious.
Then again, a creature that was scared into staying away for an entire night just because he had banged on the door last night probably didn't have much courage to begin with.
For some reason, the black beast did not flee this time; instead, it remained crouched low, staring at Lu Qing.
Lu Qing stood in a quiet standoff with it, not making any rash moves to drive it away.
He wanted to use his superpower to probe the beast's information first before making a decision.
Lu Qing tried his best to remain calm, his gaze fixed on the small beast.
However, his eyes suddenly widened.
A faint red light emerged from the mysterious little beast.
【Night Spirit Lynx: A mountain spirit beast, juvenile, female.】
【Extremely fast speed, sharp claws capable of crushing stone and rending metal.】
【Legend has it that the Night Spirit Lynx loves eating fish, yet is naturally averse to water, able only to gaze at fish with longing sighs.】
A Red-level beast?!
Lu Qing nearly jumped out of his skin in shock.
The energy light emanating from this mysterious little beast had actually reached the Red level.
Wasn't that the same level as Old Doctor Chen?
No wonder the medicinal powder hadn't worked.
Taking several deep breaths, Lu Qing struggled to calm his emotions.
A sudden sense of relief welled up in his heart.
Fortunately, he hadn't acted rashly just now.
He hadn't expected this little thing to be a Red-level spirit beast.
And what did the floating text say?
Extremely fast! Claws capable of crushing stone and rending metal!
With such exaggerated destructive power, even a tiger or a leopard might not be able to compare.
It was a good thing this beast was timid; otherwise, he would likely be lying on the ground right now.
Quietly hiding the stick behind his back, Lu Qing put on a harmless smile.
"Little guy, did you come here because you want to eat fish?"
The black beast continued to watch Lu Qing warily, seemingly not understanding what he was saying.
Lu Qing didn't expect a wild animal to understand his words.
He moved his footsteps gently, quickly retrieving two pieces of dried fish from the kitchen while trying his best not to startle the beast.
When Lu Qing appeared at the doorway holding the fish, he clearly saw the black beast's eyes seem to brighten.
As expected, this fellow was after the fish.
Lu Qing recalled the description from the third text snippet.
He waved the fish in front of him.
"Sorry for scaring you just now. These two pieces of fish are my apology to you."
The black beast's eyes, which were like lightbulbs in the night, followed the movement of the fish left and right.
Seeing this, Lu Qing felt certain.
"Here, take it."
He tossed the fish into the courtyard, intentionally throwing it a bit far from the beast to avoid provoking it.
The fish hit the ground, startling the beast into taking a few steps back as it stared intently at Lu Qing.
Lu Qing did not move, standing quietly in place.
Sensing that Lu Qing had no intention of attacking, the black beast's bristling fur subsided slightly.
It looked at the fish on the ground, its nose twitching a few times, and suddenly it moved.
Lu Qing only saw a dark shadow flash by; in the next moment, the fish on the ground had vanished.
Immediately after, the beast's silhouette leaped over the fence and quickly disappeared into the night mist.
After waiting quietly for a while to confirm the beast had left, Lu Qing finally closed the door and returned to his room.
Once lying in bed, Lu Qing's heart could no longer be controlled, thumping violently.
There was no helping it; the situation just now had been quite perilous.
Although that black beast seemed timid, who knew if it would attack a person if it were provoked?
As the saying goes, even a rabbit will bite when cornered.
Moreover, that wasn't a rabbit, but a spirit beast with powerful offensive capabilities!
Sharp claws capable of crushing stone and rending metal!
If it could tear through metal and stone, what more of a challenge would flesh and blood be?
Thus, Lu Qing truly did not dare to provoke it.
Fortunately, this black beast was not only timid but also lacked aggression.
Otherwise, it was uncertain whether Lu Qing could have survived just now.
"Such a powerful beast, why have I never heard the villagers mention it?"
Once his emotions settled, a question arose in Lu Qing's mind.
He then thought of the descriptions provided by his superpower.
The beast seemed to be a juvenile; could its parents be nearby?
Probably not; if its parents were nearby, they would likely have shown up in a group by now.
Lu Qing had not forgotten that the text mentioned the Night Spirit Lynx loves eating fish.
So, had it migrated from elsewhere, been driven away from its parents, or had something happened to its parents?
Lu Qing made several guesses, but none seemed to hit the mark.
However, he had a premonition that after tonight, this black beast would likely come to his place again.
He had no basis for it; he just had that feeling.
"It seems I can't give up fishing after all," Lu Qing thought helplessly.
Originally, he had planned to put fishing on hold recently to devote himself entirely to studying medicine.
After all, once Old Doctor Chen sold the Red Moon Carp, he would have a significant amount of money, enough to ensure that he and Xiao Yan could live without worry for a long time.
But now, having been "claimed" by this black beast, he had to change his plans.
That was a Red-level spirit beast, after all; it wasn't something he could afford to offend. He could only focus on appeasing it for the time being.
"What kind of trouble is this!"
Lu Qing couldn't help but sigh.
