Chapter 4: The Monster That Ignores the Rules of Death
“Should we drag him down and force him to talk?”
“But what if someone else stabs us in the back?”
Two contradictory thoughts cycled through their minds.
Every murderer present could tell that Wu Wang definitely knew something. If everyone in the room swarmed him at once, they could surely subdue him. But the crux of the matter was that everyone knew exactly what the others were—they were all cut from the same cloth. If you added up everyone in the lecture hall, you wouldn’t find even half a conscience among them.
The boy’s seemingly frail body possessed impressive combat skills; the first person to make contact with him would likely end up just like the burly man—bruised and battered, scattered across the floor.
Why should they be the ones to suffer while others reaped the benefits?
No one wanted to be the first bird to stick its head out.
“Let’s… examine the bodies first.” After a half-minute stalemate, someone suggested an alternative course of action.
They had noticed that when those who triggered the death rules in the darkness fell, many had collapsed against the feet or even the bodies of the living nearby. Although the survivors had immediately scrambled away the moment they felt something touch them, it didn’t change the fact that they had made contact with the corpses. Since no new deaths had occurred yet, it meant that touching the bodies did not trigger the death rules.
“No external injuries… no internal hemorrhaging either…”
“The deceased’s bodies are perfectly healthy.”
“It’s as if these guys just had their shells left behind while their souls were stripped away!”
Among the murderers were a few who worked in medical fields; they even carried scalpels to perform detailed dissections on the corpses. But precisely because they understood the human body so well, they felt even more terrified of the death rules. The loss of life caused by these rules completely defied human medicine.
“Heh, are you really sure there are no injuries? I wouldn’t be so certain~” Wu Wang’s snide voice drifted down from the stage.
He didn’t mind chatting a bit more with this bunch. After all, he was still waiting. Waiting for the next people to die during the “daytime.”
“Who are you to tell me whether there are injuries or not? Am I not the professional here?”
The person examining the bodies was a black-market doctor from a private clinic. He cursed back at Wu Wang after hearing the mockery. Aside from treating regular patients, his clinic also performed surgeries and provided medicine for people with shady identities. In a country with strict gun control, he treated patients with gunshot wounds almost every month, which was enough to show the trust those in the gray zones had in his medical skills.
When it came to physical force, the black-market doctor admitted he was no match for the boy on the podium. But when it came to medical examinations, he was confident that no one present could surpass him.
“Idiot, if they were killed by the same ghost, wouldn’t all the corpses have the same characteristics?” Wu Wang stood up, sneering, and began to move slowly.
The boy walked toward him step by step.
The black-market doctor immediately broke into a cold sweat.
That’s right! If there was only one ghost in the room, why were all the other corpses unscathed, save for the first victim whose face had been trampled?
Or was it that the ghost before and after the lights went out wasn’t the same one?
There was more than one ghost in the classroom!
While he was deep in thought, Wu Wang arrived in front of him.
“Ha! You lose!”
His train of thought was suddenly interrupted by Wu Wang’s loud shout.
Looking down, the black-market doctor saw the veins in his clenched fists bulge even more. Because the “loss” the other party spoke of was nothing more than stepping on his own blurry shadow under the spotlight.
Like a young child, Wu Wang said with a proud expression, “It’s your turn to be the ghost and step on me. Don’t underestimate the bond between me and my shadow!”
With that, Wu Wang displayed incredible flexibility, twisting his body to dodge left and right while dragging his shadow along.
*What the hell time is it, and you’re still playing some damn shadow-stepping game!?*
*How old are you, anyway?!*
If he weren’t unable to beat this kid, he would have already gone up there and cracked his skull open…
The black-market doctor, naturally, wouldn’t play along with this lunatic’s childish game. He simply crouched back down to re-examine the bodies, trying to find injuries he might have missed before.
Seeing that this guy was ignoring him, Wu Wang ran off to step on other people’s shadows. But everyone avoided him as if he were the plague, terrified that too much contact would make their own brains malfunction.
“Sigh, you won’t even return to childhood in your final moments? Society really has dyed everyone in such complex colors.” Wu Wang sighed and walked back to the podium.
*Thump!*
His footsteps as he climbed onto the podium overlapped with the sound of the black-market doctor collapsing.
*Thump! Thump!*
The footsteps sounded like a funeral march.
With every step Wu Wang took, someone would collapse, wearing a look of terror before becoming unable to move. By the time he returned to the microphone, there were ten more corpses on the floor. Most of them were the people who had almost been dragged into the shadow-stepping game by Wu Wang earlier.
“You bastard… what exactly did you do…”
The person asking was a middle-aged woman. Although she wanted her questioning to sound firm, she couldn’t overcome the fear in her heart, and her voice trembled involuntarily. It wasn’t just her; everyone who noticed Wu Wang’s behavior concluded that the recent deaths were related to him. Otherwise, how could it be such a coincidence?
Yet, no one dared to go up to the podium. It was one thing that he had displayed extraordinary combat skills earlier, but now that the boy was suspected of wielding some kind of death-rule method, they were even more wary.
“Their deaths have nothing to do with me.”
Wu Wang’s smile remained unchanged.
However, such a blatant lie caused the people below to grow restless. They felt insulted and scorned. At the end of the day, these were a group of murderers without a bottom line. Wary as they were, if they were truly pushed to the edge, they would find a way to bite a piece of flesh off Wu Wang even if it meant their own deaths! For instance, right now, some were already planning to fight to the death.
“I can reveal one death rule now.”
Before the murderers could truly riot, Wu Wang suddenly spoke into the microphone. Watching the scum who immediately pricked up their ears to listen, he shrugged and continued, seemingly backing down: “There is absolutely only one ghost in the classroom, but its rules differ between day and night.”
“When it’s dark, it goes blind. It needs to use sound to determine your location. Understand?”
In other words, the first death rule was—
【Prohibited from making obvious sounds in the dark】
The words woke the dreamers. Everyone simultaneously raised their eyebrows, their expressions dawning with realization.
So that was it!
No wonder there had been no more deaths after everyone was too terrified to move when the lights went out earlier. The biggest sounds and movements had been caused by them fighting each other! It was safe if they just stopped!
However, a small number of people remained skeptical. They hadn’t forgotten that when everyone else had stopped fighting and fallen into silence, the only things making noise in the entire classroom were this kid’s wailing, song-like singing and tap-dancing footsteps.
If the ghost really killed based on sound, why was Wu Wang fine?
There had to be something wrong…
“Do you know any other rules?”
The questioner’s tone was less sharp. They were quite satisfied with Wu Wang’s “concession” in revealing the death rule. It seemed this kid wasn’t as stupid as they had imagined!
“Shh~ Don’t be in such a hurry~ Time’s almost up~” Wu Wang’s voice returned to that snide tone.
Before everyone could react to what he meant by “time,” the familiar loud noise occurred again.
*Thump!*
The lights went out!
Everyone’s tension shot back up to their throats. They hadn’t expected the stage lights to be on for such a short time—probably only ten minutes or so. But this time, knowing the rules in advance, no one acted rashly. They just carefully adjusted their breathing and the range of their movements.
Time seemed to freeze in that moment.
In the blink of an eye, three minutes passed. No sound of anyone collapsing came from the darkness.
“What he said… was actually true!?”
Now, even that small group couldn’t help but stop doubting. After all, the facts were right before their eyes. But… was the other party really that kind-hearted?
“Ahem, silence is the Cambridge of tonight. Since you aren’t speaking, then, with your continued indulgence, I shall continue my speech.” Wu Wang’s voice came from the podium.
Most people realized the problem at hand.
He was still making noise!
Why hadn’t it triggered the death rule?
“I’m claiming Seer. I’ll check the werewolf tonight.”
Wu Wang ignored their confusion and simply pointed his hand toward the person furthest to his right. This act of completely ignoring the death rules was as terrifying as a heretic that everyone in the Middle Ages would steer clear of. No one knew how he did it. The unknown was the source of fear.
*Snap!*
As soon as he finished speaking, a stage light hit, illuminating the direction he was pointing. Under the light was the woman in the long dress who had been so scared she’d wet her pants earlier. She was still a pitiful sight, trembling.
While everyone was still shocked at how Wu Wang could make the stage lights obey his commands, his next words made everyone’s faces change drastically.
Wu Wang smiled and said—
“You are the wolf.”
“And you are the ghost disguised as a human.”
