I Became an Overnight Celebrity by Burning Incense
Chapter 10: The 5-3 Life-Saving Strategy
The next morning, Jin Li felt that her body was doing quite well.
Just in case, when Sui Lingfang came to pick her up, she was holding a copy of "Five Years of College Entrance Exams, Three Years of Simulation" in her hands.
Once they were in the car, Sui Lingfang wanted to chat with Jin Li, but Jin Li had already lowered her head and picked up a pen to start working on the practice problems.
Sui Lingfang swallowed the words that were on the tip of her tongue. This was good, very good.
Look at how composed she was!
Upon arriving at the company, Jin Li saw the boss she hadn't seen in a long time. This wasn't the first time she had met him, but it was only the third.
The first time was to sign her contract.
The second time was to see a doctor.
The third time, it was still to see a doctor.
The boss’s name was Xiao Ziquan, a very ordinary and plain name.
President Xiao’s appearance was also very ordinary; he smiled like a Maitreya Buddha and had the typical middle-aged paunch. There wasn't a shred of overbearing arrogance about him.
Jin Li had heard from Sister Fang that President Xiao had grown up in a small town and tested into a university in a big city, becoming a college student—a rarity in that era.
Then, while in college, he applied for a study abroad program through his school, spent two years as an exchange student overseas, successfully landed an offer from Wall Street, and became a financial consultant for an international bank.
From a financial consultant, he was transferred to be a branch manager in a certain region, and finally, the headquarters promoted him to be the General Manager of the Greater China region.
When President Xiao resigned, the position he had reached was the highest one a Chinese person could attain within that group. It is said that to this day, this record has yet to be broken.
Simply put, he was a super-powerful big shot.
Facing President Xiao, Jin Li felt slightly reserved.
However, President Xiao’s first sentence wasn't to ask about her health, but to ask what she was holding in her hands.
Jin Li replied, "A workbook for the first year of high school. I’ve been taking online classes recently, seeing if I can self-study my way into university."
President Xiao was a bit surprised. "You want to go back to school?"
Jin Li answered cautiously, "Yes. The older I get, the more I feel I’ve suffered from a lack of education."
President Xiao nodded. "That’s great. The company supports your studies. How can online classes be enough? I’ll have the company hire a private tutor for you."
Jin Li shook her head, not daring to take him up on that. She felt it would be undeserved, and she was worried that President Xiao might not have the best intentions.
There were always some unsavory things in the entertainment industry, and she didn't know what the internal situation at Chenxi Entertainment was like. After all, before her recent resurgence, she had been a fringe figure.
President Xiao seemed to notice that Jin Li was nervous in his presence, so he didn't say much more and told Sui Lingfang to accompany her to the hospital.
The old doctor of traditional Chinese medicine at Jingda Hospital was a famous physician; one needed to book an appointment a month in advance to see him. Originally, President Xiao had booked the slot for himself, but now, he had given it to Jin Li.
Inside the TCM room.
The old doctor first listened to Sui Lingfang describe Jin Li’s condition, then observed, listened, questioned, and took her pulse. He wrote a few lines in a sweeping, elegant hand and told Jin Li to go get some scans done.
The whole process took two hours.
When the images were finally sent to the old doctor, he looked at Jin Li carefully, then compared her to the images before saying, "Your physical foundation is too weak."
Everyone’s heart tightened.
"However, looking at it now, you’ve been taking good care of yourself. Doing a little bit of exercise will be helpful for your recovery."
The giant stone hanging in everyone’s hearts finally fell.
"I saw your medical records three years ago. I originally thought you wouldn't live to see four years, but looking at you now, you’re only slightly weaker than the average person. I’m quite happy for you; it turns out I misdiagnosed you three years ago."
The old doctor said slowly, "I hope there are more misdiagnoses like this; that way, I can retire sooner."
Once these words were spoken, everyone laughed.
The group walked out of the hospital. They were as relaxed going back as they had been nervous coming.
Back at the company, Sui Lingfang held a small meeting with the other agents. An hour later, she notified Jin Li that she would be livestreaming on Maozhua in the afternoon to talk about the "Jin Li Good Luck" incident.
Sui Lingfang tried to persuade her: "I know you hate hype, but the market is different from four years ago. It values media and public opinion more. Since you went viral because of the 'Koi' (Jin Li) incident, the company plans to build a 'Koi' persona for you to increase the netizens' impression of you."
Jin Li nodded, having no objections. She was a koi fish, after all; this wasn't hype at all.
"Also, the company wants you to talk more about how you felt when you were scratching the lottery ticket to attract more viewers."
Jin Li asked, "How long do I need to talk for?"
Sui Lingfang said, "About three or four minutes. It’s not good to keep repeating it; it would seem too deliberate."
"After I finish talking, can I end the stream?"
Sui Lingfang observed her expression and guessed something. "Are you wanting to continue the stream to study?"
Jin Li nodded. "I have to study every day. If I miss a day, the drive to get into university might fade."
Sui Lingfang hesitated for a moment, then said with uncharacteristic uncertainty, "Then study."
Jin Li didn't pay attention to Sui Lingfang’s internal struggle. After eating lunch at the company, she prepared to start the livestream, showing no signs of nervousness.
Call her unambitious or content with the status quo—whether she was popular or not, it just meant she had more work to choose from and a heavier workload.
She had survived the days when she only made a base salary; how much worse could it get?
With her physical condition, even if she were busy, how busy could she really be?
So her mindset was exceptionally peaceful, while the agents in the company were the ones who were nervous.
Sui Lingfang guarded Jin Li in the livestream room, while Zou Da and the other agents gathered in the office, taking out their phones to watch Jin Li’s stream.
"It’s started, it’s started!" someone shouted.
"How many people are there?"
"Five thousand, ten thousand, thirty thousand... five hundred thousand!"
In just ten minutes, Jin Li’s livestream, which had been promoted in advance, had gathered 500,000 people.
The number of people entering the room began to slow down, but it was still steadily increasing.
Jin Li received a hand signal from Sui Lingfang and said to the screen, "Hello everyone, I am Jin Li, the 'Black-Clad Koi' lady you’ve all been talking about."
[I knew Jin Li was the black-clad koi! She wore the same clothes yesterday, it couldn't be more confirmed, and yet people still said it was fake!]
[Jin Li is the real koi!] X100
[Jin Li, share some good luck with me!]
Jin Li was just about to follow the script the company gave her when she suddenly saw this comment. Her heart stirred. "How about this? I’ll hold a lucky draw. How about I give away the lottery card I won with?"
Netizens flooded the screen: [Yes].
Sui Lingfang helped her set up the draw in a flash. Jin Li slowly began to tell the netizens about her trip to the Yue Mountain Temple.
"I went to Yue Mountain Temple, actually, because of my health..." Her voice was unhurried, causing many agitated netizens to quiet down.
"As for how I won the lottery, that was mostly down to luck. However, luck is a very ethereal thing; everyone shouldn't pursue it too excessively."
Jin Li changed the subject: "I saw some comments saying that the media photographed me going to the hospital this morning. Yes, I went to the hospital with my team this morning."
She smiled slightly, like a sweet breeze in the scorching summer, with a spark in her eyes that seemed to be setting a prairie fire.
"The doctor said I can do some appropriate exercise, which is good for my body. In other words, I might be able to return to the stage."
This sentence caused the Maozhua livestream to crash completely.
