Frontline of Gossip in the Quick Transmigration World
Chapter 14: The Homeless Female Supporting Character 14
See? Even a driver feels that one cannot rely entirely on their nephews and their kin; it is better to have one's own house.
Zhang Yu did not believe for a second that Zhang Dagui and his wife hadn't thought of this, or rather, that they didn't simply not care about their youngest daughter's future.
All they needed was their own twilight years—to be cared for, with grandchildren surrounding them.
"True. That's why I have to work hard to earn my own money. If I'm seconded to an external site, the subsidies are quite generous."
Zhang Yu had made up her mind. Whether she would eventually be transferred back was a matter for the future; for now, she would focus on working well away from home.
The driver caught the underlying meaning in Zhang Yu's words and realized she was a smart woman. Everyone in the company knew that being sent to an external unit sounded prestigious, as one would be called a "Director."
In reality, it was a director without actual power. The company sent people there specifically to keep an eye on the finances.
Naturally, the people at the local company, from top to bottom, would not welcome Zhang Yu's arrival, but because the Group was the majority shareholder, they had no choice but to endure it.
"How is the environment over there?"
"It's just so-so," Zhang Yu replied. "But the benefits and compensation are quite good." After all, she held the status of an imperial envoy.
"That'll do then. I'm not counting on gaining any power; as long as I complete the tasks assigned by the company, it's enough."
As for social obligations, there was already a finance manager on-site. Zhang Yu already knew her role: to monitor the subsidiary's cash flow, signed contracts, expense reimbursements, and so on.
As for anything else, she would not interfere. When it was time to play deaf, she would be a professional at it.
However, she still had to do what needed to be done. The Group had paid a high price to send her there; she wasn't meant to be a mere mascot.
Zhang Yu had already decided how she would handle things.
Regarding her personal affairs, she had also made a plan: she would obtain a professional certification. Although many currently claimed the CPA exam was difficult, compared to the future, it was actually quite simple.
Even if she never intended to work at an accounting firm, having more certifications while working for a large corporation was a good thing. If the need ever arose, she could put them to use.
After having lunch at a service station, she continued her journey. By the time she arrived at the company, it was already past two in the afternoon, around three o'clock.
Zhang Yu had anticipated that the attitude at the subsidiary would not be very welcoming, but when she discovered that the General Manager and other executives were all out of the office, and she was being received only by a finance manager, she couldn't help but gasp.
Was this an attempt to intimidate her? Zhang Yu felt that was a possibility, but since the others would never admit it, she couldn't press the issue.
Fortunately, although the senior management was absent, her office was quite nice, complete with a private bathroom and a lounge.
However, even though the office was well-furnished, it was unfortunately quite a distance from the finance department.
Walking toward the finance department, Zhang Yu joked, "This distance is a bit much."
The finance manager secretly agreed. In an effort to keep Zhang Yu as far away from the finance department as possible, they had sacrificed a Vice President's office.
"I was just thinking, if I want to hear a certain data report, wouldn't it be a bit far for you all to walk to my office?"
"Especially if you need to bring documents over; I'm really worried I'll get tired."
After taking a tour of the finance department, Zhang Yu pointed to a corner. "It's a hassle. Please add a workstation for me here."
"Huh?" The finance manager froze, and the busy staff in the finance department were equally stunned. They knew that the company had prepared such a fine office specifically to keep this Finance Director away from them.
It seemed now that the company leadership's arrangements had gone awry; this new Finance Director was clearly not a pushover.
Although Zhang Yu had taken up her post in a hurry, the company had looked into her background as soon as the candidate was selected.
To put it bluntly, because she had been a low-level finance employee for many years, everyone assumed she lacked ability and was merely a placeholder to make room for certain people.
In other words, they thought her abilities were so negligible that they didn't even need to pay attention to her; they could just treat her with superficial respect, and someone would prepare the data she needed to report.
But looking at her now, it was clear she was not someone to be trifled with.
After waiting for a long time without a response, Zhang Yu stared fixedly at the stunned finance manager. "Is that not possible?"
"That... that..." The finance manager was truly panicking. Although he was the one with actual power within the finance department, he couldn't ignore the fact that she was the "imperial envoy"—the Finance Director, whose position was above his.
If things escalated, even the boss wouldn't be able to fix it.
But if he simply agreed, what would the leadership think when they returned and saw this? Would they think he was incompetent and unable to handle such a small matter?
Zhang Yu noticed a small office belonging to a finance manager within the department. "If you find it inconvenient, I can stay in your office."
She opened the finance manager's office door, scanned the room, and said, "I think we could remove the sofa in your office and put a desk there instead."
"It might be a bit cramped, but I think it's acceptable." In short, Zhang Yu was making it clear: either give her an office right next to the finance department, or she would have a desk inside the department itself.
Since Zhang Yu hadn't closed the door while speaking, her words naturally spread.
The employees working outside gasped upon hearing this, exchanging looks of pure astonishment.
They were all thinking the same thing: how did those people gather their information? This woman clearly wasn't someone to be bullied, so how did they report that she was incompetent?
Then again, it made sense—if she were truly incompetent, why would she have been sent here?
Everyone felt a sense of dread. What now? Would there be too much trouble ahead?
The Finance Director clearly had her own mission and a powerful background backing her up; she didn't need to care about the leadership's temperament.
But what about the small fry like them? When gods fight, it is the mortals who suffer the most.
The staff could only pray that no matter how the leaders fought their battles, it would stay within the management level and not involve them.
Zhang Yu looked at the finance manager, who was truly at his breaking point. If they shared an office, how could they ever discuss business privately?
Forget it. The finance manager decided he couldn't handle this alone; he would have to report this to someone in authority and see what they decided.
That way, if the leadership was dissatisfied later, it wouldn't be his fault.
The finance manager stated, "Changing offices is a major matter. I must request instructions from the leadership."
Zhang Yu, of course, knew this required approval. "I can wait."
