Chapter 5: The Homeless Female Supporting Character 5
This was the first time Jiang Yun had heard Zhang Guohua’s thoughts. She knew she was anxious, but he was even more so.
“Then what should we do?”
Jiang Yun panicked as well. It was true; if they let Zhang Shouhua and the others take care of the old folks, they would definitely demand the house and money in return.
“I don’t know either.” Zhang Guohua knew Jiang Yun was panicked now, and he felt he should give her some peace of mind.
Unfortunately, he didn’t know what to do either; he was just as lost.
Although Zhang Shouhua and his wife, along with Zhang Hong and her husband, were also full of dissatisfaction regarding Zhang Yu moving away for work, they were faring much better than the panicked Zhang Guohua and his wife. They had a more far-reaching idea.
“Since Zhang Yu is going to work in another city, she definitely won’t be able to continue taking care of the old folks. When the time comes, can’t the house under the old man’s name be split four ways?”
“Why not? After all, we’ve all put in the effort and taken care of Mom and Dad.”
“We’re the ones putting in the effort to look after the old couple, so why shouldn’t we have a share of the property under their names?”
It wasn’t that Zhang Shouhua and the others hadn’t had designs on the assets under Zhang Dagui and his wife’s names; they just knew that even if they did, it wasn’t something they could easily get their hands on.
But they hadn’t expected that just when they thought it had nothing to do with them, reality told them they still had a chance. How could they not be excited?
Zhang Yu didn’t care about the mutual scheming between the three of them; she was busy cleaning the house.
She truly didn’t understand. When they were at their own homes, they would spit any food scraps into a container rather than just spitting them on the floor.
Yet here, they did whatever made them comfortable. Whether it was clean or not had absolutely nothing to do with them.
As she cleaned, Zhang Yu cursed under her breath. She had never seen such uncouth people.
In the end, feeling helpless, she could only comfort herself again: *Forget it, they’re like a rabbit’s tail—they won’t be around much longer. If they want this kind of treatment in the future, they’ll have to do the work themselves.*
It was only by clinging to this hope that she managed to finish cleaning the living room.
After she finished, she expected to face Zhang Dagui and his wife, but to her surprise, they had already returned to their room.
She checked the time—it was already ten o’clock. For the old couple, it was already bedtime.
She knew that if they didn’t talk today, they would likely try to talk to her tomorrow, but wasn’t it better to delay it by a day?
Once the paperwork was finalized tomorrow, her transfer to the subsidiary in another city would be completely set in stone.
Zhang Yu took a shower in the bathroom and then cleaned it up as well. By the time she finished everything, it was eleven o’clock.
“Seriously, I work all day, and when I get home at night, I still have to wait on a whole crowd of people. It’s ridiculous.”
“Today is Wednesday, tomorrow is Thursday, the day after is Friday, and I’m leaving early Saturday morning.”
*Heh heh heh heh.* Zhang Yu had already made up her mind: once the paperwork was done tomorrow, she would immediately book her flight and leave early. That way, the weekend gathering would be their own problem.
There was no reason for her to be the one to serve them food and drink after they had schemed against her.
Zhang Yu lay on the bed and sighed comfortably. “Once I get there, I’m definitely going to buy a good bed and a nice mattress.”
Actually, the original owner had bought a good bed and mattress before, but after Jiang Yun saw them, she made all sorts of pointed remarks.
She said that Zhang Yi was getting older and needed a better bed and mattress, but that they were too expensive for her and her husband to afford.
Then came the familiar scene: the original owner hadn’t slept on that bed and mattress for long before they became Zhang Yi’s.
After that, even when the original owner’s salary increased, she never bought a new bed or mattress again, fearing that either Zhang Yi or Zhang Xin would set their eyes on them.
Once she was in the other city, she wouldn’t have to worry about anyone coveting her bed.
She could also decorate the house according to her own wishes—perhaps buy a coffee machine or a tea table. That way, on weekends, she could drink coffee if she wanted, or tea if she felt like it.
Zhang Yu was truly filled with all sorts of expectations for her future life.
The next day at work, she quickly finished the transfer paperwork, and her current tasks were handed over to others in no time.
Just before getting off work, her supervisor called Zhang Yu over again. She was surprised, wondering what he wanted.
When the supervisor saw Zhang Yu, he told her to sit down and quickly hung up the phone. “Xiao Zhang, what date were you originally planning to leave?”
“Saturday,” Zhang Yu hesitated. “I’d arrive there on Saturday, take Sunday to adjust, and start work on Monday.”
“You’ve already handed over your current work, right?” The supervisor changed the subject.
First, he asked when she planned to leave, and now he was asking if her work had been handed over.
At that moment, Zhang Yu had only one thought: if there were no surprises, was he planning to have her go early?
However, these were just her own thoughts; whether it was truly the case depended on the supervisor.
The supervisor hesitated for a moment. “I received a call from over there today saying that if possible, they hope you can go over a bit earlier.”
“Xiao Zhang, do you think you could go tomorrow?”
“It just so happens the company has a car heading that way.” The supervisor framed it as asking for her opinion.
She knew that when a supervisor says they are “discussing it with you,” it actually means they only accept agreement, not opposition.
“I have no objections. My things are mostly packed already,” Zhang Yu replied, indicating she could leave at any time.
Seeing Zhang Yu so cooperative, the supervisor thought for a moment. “I’ll send a business van tomorrow. You can take everything you can fit in the car.”
This was a huge, pleasant surprise. Zhang Yu had been wondering whether she should make a trip to a logistics company tomorrow morning.
Now, she could just leave with the car. “That’s more than enough.”
Thanks to not wanting to see the rest of the Zhang family yesterday, she had already packed her things early.
Going back today, she could just finish up, take everything she needed, and leave behind anything that wasn’t essential.
Once she got there, she would have to replace many of her clothes anyway, so she could travel light.
Seeing how cooperative she was, the supervisor told Zhang Yu she could leave work early.
Looking at the clock, it was already 4:30. Zhang Yu was speechless at the idea of “leaving early.”
Leaving half an hour early—did that even count as leaving early? *Forget it, leaving half an hour early is better than nothing; I shouldn’t ask for too much.*
Zhang Yu returned to her desk, packed up all her personal belongings, and prepared to leave.
Her colleagues had all assumed she would stay until the weekend before heading to the other city for work, so they were surprised to hear she was leaving tomorrow.
Everyone bid her farewell. Although she was still in the same company, she was only going to work at a subsidiary.
In theory, Zhang Yu was just going there for a few years and could be transferred back later, but that was only in theory.
Many people who were transferred to subsidiaries—whether to another city or a local one—basically never returned.
Zhang Yu knew that even though she was going to a subsidiary in another city, and even with the increased salary and generous subsidies, in the eyes of these colleagues, she was essentially being exiled.
As for her, she no longer cared whether she could return to the group headquarters. While it was a prestigious place, it was also a place where the winds blew hard, and it was very easy to get implicated in things.
Staying at a subsidiary, on the other hand, would be as leisurely as one could possibly want.
