Fragrance Returns
Chapter 1: Born into a Good Family
Xun Xiang lay on the bed, feeling utterly bored.
Even without the swaddling clothes binding her, she couldn't turn over; her only movement was stretching her arms and legs.
She couldn't speak, could only cry or laugh, and even her laughter could only be a smile.
She couldn't see anything either. At birth, there was only darkness; it took several days before she could perceive faint light.
The best things she could do were poop, pee, and fart—they came whenever they pleased, and she couldn't hold them in at all.
Yes, Xun Xiang had transmigrated, and she was currently only about twenty days old. To be precise, she couldn't quite remember if it was twenty-some days or more.
A few days ago, Xun Xiang's vision had improved slightly. She could vaguely see objects in front of her at a distance of about twenty to thirty centimeters. However, they lacked color and depth, appearing like blurry black-and-white drawings.
The first object she saw was a "nipple" when the wet nurse shoved it into her mouth. It looked like a small black circle drawn on paper being pressed down, complete with wrinkles. It gave her quite a fright, and she resolutely refused to open her mouth. Only when she was starving beyond endurance did she close her eyes and suck it in.
She had also seen the faces of the Princess, her mother, and her older brother when they kissed and smelled her. It was as if pieces of paper with facial features were floating toward her—blurry and frightening.
This indistinct, two-dimensional world left Xun Xiang feeling apprehensive, and she was still struggling to adapt.
Fortunately, an infant's sense of smell and hearing are acute, which allowed her to perceive her surroundings.
Birds chirped outside the window, and a fragrance lingered around her nose—subtle, elegant, and extremely faint, as if it were barely there.
The fragrance emanated from Xun Xiang's own body. When she sweated or cried, the scent became slightly more intense.
In this life, she had not only brought her natural fragrance and memories but had also been born into a privileged family. Her mother was a Princess, her father was a top scholar (*Zhuangyuan*), her maternal grandfather was the Emperor, her maternal grandmother was the Empress, and she had an older brother named "Bo-ge'er."
She didn't know exactly how old her brother was, but he was likely two or three years old.
It couldn't be helped; Xun Xiang spent most of her time sleeping and had contact with almost only two wet nurses, so the information she possessed was extremely limited.
The name "Xun Xiang," which was the same as her name in her previous life, was a royal gift bestowed by her maternal grandfather, the Emperor, after he learned of her natural fragrance.
When the imperial decree arrived, the wet nurse carried her to receive it. It happened to coincide with a brief moment of her being awake, allowing her to learn that her name in this life was the same as her previous one, and that her mother's title was Princess Dongyang.
Unfortunately, the Princess had suffered heavy bleeding during childbirth, which damaged her health. The servants did not dare to overwork her, so Xun Xiang was rarely taken to her mother's room. As her one-month milestone approached, Xun Xiang had only seen her mother three times and her brother six times.
She had also been carried by a wet nurse into the palace once to meet her maternal grandfather, the Emperor, and her maternal grandmother, the Empress, accompanied by her older brother.
The Emperor and Empress were overjoyed by this granddaughter and both held her. The Empress, in particular, praised her as the most beautiful girl under heaven and kissed her face.
She had never met her father; he had been sent to Xiangxi to preside over the provincial examinations. She had learned this from overhearing idle chatter.
Her paternal grandfather's family was very large, with four generations living under one roof. On the day of her "Three-Day Bath" feast, Xun Xiang had been carried out to meet them once, but it was so chaotic and she was so half-asleep that she had no idea who was who.
They say reincarnation is a technical skill. She must have saved the Milky Way in her life before last, and perhaps her previous life was so unsatisfying that she was granted birth into this magnificent family in this life.
Xun Xiang had read some web novels in her past life and knew that some transmigrated female protagonists came with "golden fingers" (special powers).
And she had come with a natural body fragrance. Was this meant to build a special "beautiful woman" persona for her?
Even though everything was black-and-white and two-dimensional, she could tell that the Princess was very beautiful. She had heard that her father, the Consort, was a rare beauty; if that were true, how beautiful must this body be?
Sometimes Xun Xiang would think narcissistically that it was a good thing her grandfather was the Emperor; no matter how beautiful or fragrant she was, no one would dare touch her.
Because Xun Xiang was so incredibly beautiful, she would often grin foolishly whenever she was idle. Of course, it wasn't a loud laugh, but a silent smile.
The wet nurse, Mother Xia, often said, "Little Xiang seems to be smiling most of the time..."
She had two wet nurses, Mother Xia and Mother Li, along with a group of servants. She was too small for any other servants to have the opportunity to attend to her closely.
There were still two things that left Xun Xiang somewhat dissatisfied. First, her arms and everything below were almost always bound in swaddling clothes, even when lying in bed. Second, she spent almost all her time in the bedroom of the West Courtyard; she was either lying in bed or in a wet nurse's arms. She was rarely taken to visit her mother, who was sitting the month and recovering in the main house, and she was seldom carried to the courtyard to bask in the sun.
She desperately hoped for time to pass quickly so she could grow up and achieve freedom of movement.
*Pfft.*
While lying in bed daydreaming, Xun Xiang was caught off guard as a patch of runny poop squirted out of her little bottom.
It felt uncomfortable!
"Wah~ wah~ wah~"
To remind the wet nurse to change her diaper and wash her bottom, she could only cry.
As tears flowed uncontrollably, a faint fragrance also drifted out.
"Oh, the little lady has pooped again."
The gentle voice of the wet nurse, Mother Li, drifted in.
The swaddling was opened, her lower body was stripped bare, and a soft hand, accompanied by water, began to wash repeatedly between her legs.
Xun Xiang wanted to cry but had no tears.
Mother Xia smiled and said, "The little lady is growing more, and she's getting even more handsome."
Mother Li hummed in agreement. "The Consort is a famous beauty in our Great Li Dynasty, and Her Highness the Princess is also a beauty. There is no telling how beautiful the little lady will be in the future."
Mother Xia laughed, "The little lady is born with a floral scent and is as beautiful as a flower. Never mind Her Highness; even the Emperor and Empress adore her. I heard that on the little lady's one-month birthday, the Emperor will bestow upon her the title of County Princess (*Xianzhu*)."
Mother Li clicked her tongue in admiration. "The little lady is truly blessed."
Xun Xiang loved hearing such things and grinned with her toothless mouth.
She had learned another piece of information: this dynasty was the Great Li Dynasty. There was no such dynasty in the history of her previous life; it must be a fictional setting.
Mother Li asked again, "Do you think the fragrance on her body will last forever? Will it suddenly disappear one day?"
Mother Xia paused. She had never thought of such a question and said uncertainly, "Surely not."
Mother Li smiled. "I also think not." She paused and added, "Take this mole on my left eyebrow; my mother told me it was flesh-colored when I was little, turned slowly black after age five, and became completely black after age eight."
Xun Xiang hadn't thought about this question before either. Would the fragrance suddenly vanish one day, just like how some children's eyes change from single eyelids to double eyelids?
It wasn't an impossible scenario. If that happened, it would be a pity.
After her bottom was washed, a small circle appeared before her eyes again. Xun Xiang sucked it into her mouth; it was soft, very three-dimensional, and not thin at all.
She began to suckle instinctively. When she nursed, she truly exerted all her strength.
Xun Xiang had no psychological barriers regarding breastfeeding. Her most private parts were seen and washed by others every day; what was this compared to that? It was a stage of life that everyone had to go through.
Finally, August 19th arrived—Xun Xiang's one-month milestone.
The Princess's manor was to hold a grand one-month banquet today; the invitations had been sent out several days ago.
Princess Dongyang's health had improved, and early in the morning, she held her precious daughter in her arms. She looked at Xun Xiang with eyes full of smiles and leaned down to smell the fragrance on her.
When the Consort returned home and saw such a lovely and unique daughter, he would surely be unable to put her down.
