Back to the 1980s: Foraging in the Mountains is Also a Way of Life

Chapter 48: The Pretty Widow, Shen Wei (Please keep reading, please recommend)

The "Two-Headed Black" is actually a pine marten.

Many places call it the "Two-Headed Black," while others call it the "Earth Dog."

This creature has a black-gray nose and a black-gray tip on its tail!

Perhaps because of this characteristic, it is called the "Two-Headed Black"!

The reason Wang An noticed it was because the fur on its back was a brownish-yellow mixed with reddish-brown, which, from a distance, looked just like a yellow-throated marten.

Yellow-throated martens are extremely ferocious; their fur is smooth and soft, but it isn't worth much, so no one wants them! Therefore, hunters don't bother chasing them.

But this thing can hunt roe deer, small wild boars, and little deer! It dares to show off to horses and even dares to injure them.

Wang An had already raised his gun, but upon getting closer, he realized it wasn't a marten!

He saw the creature chasing a "Big-Eyed Thief."

The "Big-Eyed Thief," also known as a weasel, looks somewhat like a mouse, but it isn't a mouse. Its eyes protrude, and the tip of its tail is fluffy, looking like a new calligraphy brush that hasn't touched water!

These two little creatures didn't look large, but they ran incredibly fast!

As the Big-Eyed Thief ran, it dove into an underground hole. The hole dug by the Big-Eyed Thief was roughly the same thickness as the creature itself!

But the Two-Headed Black was much larger than the Big-Eyed Thief, about the size of four or five of them!

Yet, with such a narrow hole, it dove straight in after it!

Just over a minute later, it came back out, but it came out backward! It was still clutching a Big-Eyed Thief in its mouth!

This Two-Headed Black was just too damn miraculous!

Mainly, that hole was so narrow—did it know bone-shrinking kung fu?

The more Wang An pondered this creature, the more miraculous it felt!

Ten minutes later, Wang An returned to his own courtyard.

He let out a shout toward the house!

Three adults plus Wang Yi came out of the house. The two little girls didn't come out; they just leaned against the window to take a look.

It seemed the whole family was used to Wang An's eccentric ways—arriving home and ignoring everything else.

However, this time, everyone let out a collective gasp of surprise.

The black bear, with its four limbs stretched out, looked massive; it looked much larger than the 300-plus jin "Great Cannon Egg"!

Wang Dazhu immediately blocked Wang An, who was leading his horse into the stable.

He asked, "How did you pull this black bear back by yourself? Didn't you leave half for your old uncle?"

Wang An knew what his father meant; he was simply worried that he was being too greedy and lacked common sense!

Wang An didn't care what his father thought and answered directly, "I shot two! I'm just bringing this small one back!"

After arranging the horse, he came out and recounted everything in detail, except for the danger of "gutting the belly."

Because Wang An had been hunting with Feng Chengmin, Mu Xueqing and Liu Guilan didn't doubt him; they were merely puzzled but remained silent.

But Wang Dazhu's expression turned solemn. Many hunters had failed during "gutting the belly" and had been kicked by black bears. He wasn't sure who Wang An was with!

After a while, Wang Dazhu's expression softened, as if he had come to terms with it.

Mountain hunting was never easy work to begin with! Besides, his son had already hunted the wild leopards and the Great Cannon Eggs, and now he had taken down a black bear!

Among the ferocious animals in the mountains, except for the big-clawed ones and wolves, they had all been dealt with! With a little caution, nothing would happen! Wang Dazhu comforted himself this way.

The group didn't carry the black bear into the house. Just like they had done with the 500-plus jin Great Cannon Egg a few days ago, they skinned the black bear right in the courtyard!

The meat of this black bear was very unique.

It had been at least six or seven hours since it was killed!

Yet, it hadn't frozen even a little bit!

In Northeast China right now, although it hadn't reached the truly bone-chilling "shell-cracking" days, it was still minus twenty-something degrees during the day!

This black bear meat clearly ignored the temperature! Not only was it not frozen, it was even lukewarm!

It seemed Feng Chengmin had known this would happen; there wasn't even snow stuffed inside the bear's belly.

Wang Dazhu first took the jumping cats and wild chickens into the house to thaw them out, then came back out to work together!

Only Wang An didn't spare a glance, focusing intently on bonding with the three large dogs!

Over the past two days, these three dogs had become completely familiar with the family! They played happily with everyone.

Plus, Wang An was generous with feeding them animal fat and meat!

These three dogs clearly looked a bit fatter than when they were bought, and their fur had become shiny and black!

Just then, the three dogs suddenly stopped playing and looked toward the main gate together!

These three dogs were exceptionally clever. As long as the owners were in the courtyard—even if it was just the two little girls—they would never bark wildly at strangers; they would just stare at them!

Only if they failed to hear the owners' voices for a long time would they bark "woof woof woof" three times, and even then, they would continue to stare at the stranger.

Following the dogs' gaze, Wang An turned his head and saw a woman. She was quite a pretty and striking woman!

Although she couldn't compare to Mu Xueqing's unrivaled beauty in the entire province, she had a genuine charm and a naturally elegant bone structure!

Wang An had an impression of this woman; her name was Shen Wei, and she lived not far from Wang An's house, about two or three hundred meters away.

Back when the educated youth were sent to the countryside in Kaoshan Village, during those special years, her parents had passed away, and a brother of hers had also gone missing!

She then settled down in Kaoshan Village. Now she was a widow, living with an old lady and a four-year-old girl. With just those three, one could imagine how difficult life must be in these times!

In his previous life, in the summer of '82, the year land was just being distributed to households, this woman passed away!

To be precise, she committed suicide by drowning, taking her six-year-old daughter with her!

At the time, this incident caused a huge sensation and had a massive impact near Kaoshan Village!

But the public security officers were busy with the mess in the county and that large group of problematic people! They had no time to care!

They only assigned two militia members to handle it, but what could they do? They had a drink with Niu Yiqun and then hurriedly closed the case, ruling it a suicide!

However, the villagers of Kaoshan Village knew what really happened!

To make matters worse, the old lady in Shen Wei's house was her mother-in-law, and by now, she was already bedridden, seemingly destined to pass away in the winter of '81 next year!

Because there were no men in the family, the village handled the funeral arrangements.

Among the people sent to handle the funeral was a man named Niu Dali, the nephew of the brigade secretary Niu Yiqun. This man was average-looking but quite tall, perhaps slightly shorter than Wang An.

He spent his days stealing chickens and doing nothing productive; he was a heavy drinker and a gambler! His wife couldn't stand him anymore and had hanged herself!

Fortunately, there were no children! After being left alone, he became even more unbridled, becoming a menace to Kaoshan Village!

Niu Yiqun had beaten him many times, but beating him was useless!

Actually, helping to handle the old lady's funeral was considered a good job, because land distribution had just begun and work points hadn't been settled yet, so anyone doing this work was given full work points!

Seeing that the old lady was gone, Niu Dali, who had long harbored ill intentions toward Shen Wei, wanted her to live with him.

Shen Wei certainly wouldn't agree!
