Chapter 2: The Son-in-Law Wants to Hit His Mother-in-Law
Li Chunlan opened her mouth, but ultimately said nothing. She was the type of person who protected her own fiercely; in the past, if anyone dared treat her son this way, she would have insulted their entire lineage for eighteen generations.
But today, she was just here to watch the show! She knew her own daughter better than anyone, and she knew that today's matter certainly wouldn't end here.
Deng Caijie was indeed about to fly into a rage. As soon as Qin Yike returned, she had been acting sarcastic and even addressed her by her first name without any regard for seniority, which made her feel extremely uncomfortable! Especially since her elderly mother and brother were both present—wasn't this making a mockery of them? As a junior, she had actually thrown a water cup at her elders and used such foul language. What was she trying to do? Start a rebellion?
The honest and simple Qin Weiming sat to the side without saying a word. He was indeed a bit intimidated; he had never seen his daughter lose her temper so violently, let alone throw things. Yet, for some reason, he felt his daughter was doing a great job, and he wondered why he felt like giving her a thumbs up.
The atmosphere was strange. Feeling her face burn, Deng Caijie stood up abruptly and pointed at Qin Yike. "You..."
"You what!" Qin Yike gave her no chance to speak. "From the time I was little until now, when have you ever considered my feelings? You always listen to what others say! When I had such a good job in Beijing, you told me to give it up, and when I wouldn't, you resorted to that whole routine of crying, making a scene, and threatening suicide! Do you have any idea I was so angry in Beijing that I fainted and ended up in the hospital?"
Mentioning this matter made Deng Caijie feel guilty.
"Wasn't I doing it for your own good? You're just a young girl; do you know how hard it is to establish yourself in Beijing? You couldn't afford a house even if you worked your whole life! Wouldn't it be better to stay by me and your father and just find someone to marry honestly?"
On this point, Qin Weiming actually agreed. He only had one daughter, so of course, he didn't want her to live too far from home!
"Yike, your mother is doing this for your own good!"
For her own good? Qin Yike let out a cold laugh. She wouldn't believe for a second that Li Chunlan and Deng Xinmin weren't involved in this.
"In short, you don't need to meddle in my business!"
Unexpectedly, Li Chunlan jumped in at that moment, stepping right in front of Qin Yike.
"You child, have you spent a few years in a big city and forgotten who you are?" Li Chunlan's finger was nearly poking Qin Yike's nose.
Qin Yike stared at her coldly, a storm brewing in her eyes.
Li Chunlan was completely oblivious. This old woman had always been unreasonable; she felt that whether she was at her son's house or her daughter's, she was the most authoritative person, and no one dared to disobey her.
"Was it easy for your mother to raise you this much? How can you speak to her like that?" Li Chunlan was trying to assert her superiority in front of her daughter—showing her that even her own child wasn't on her side, and that only her biological mother loved and pampered her most.
Deng Caijie fell for this tactic completely. Looking at Qin Yike, her eyes were indeed filled with disappointment. A surge of extreme grievance welled up in her heart, and tears suddenly streamed down her face.
Li Chunlan was a master of sowing discord; with just a few words, she had made Deng Caijie feel utterly disappointed in her own daughter. She felt secretly smug and did not even bother to hide it.
"Grandma, this is our family matter. It's better if outsiders don't get involved."
"I'm an outsider?" This was the one thing Li Chunlan hated hearing most. "Your mother was born from me, so how am I an outsider? I am your elder!" She demanded absolute authority.
Deng Caijie stepped forward agitatedly, questioning Qin Yike with a dark face, "That is your grandmother! How can she be an outsider? You are just ungrateful. Have you forgotten how good your grandmother has been to you?"
Qin Yike laughed. "Then I must ask you, how exactly has my grandmother been good to me??"
Deng Caijie was about to argue righteously, but she choked on her words because she truly couldn't remember.
"From the time I was little until now, has she looked after me for a single day? Has she washed a single piece of my clothing? Has she fed me once, or given me any money?"
Qin Weiming secretly cheered from the side, thinking to himself that his daughter had hit the nail on the head. He had also been exploited by his mother-in-law for many years, and it was impossible for him not to have some resentment in his heart.
Naturally, Deng Caijie had nothing to say.
"Her money and her love are only reserved for her son and grandson. You and my eldest aunt are just puppets in her hands! Deng Caijie, you've been ruined by her enough in this lifetime; why should you force me to live like this too?"
"Qin Yike, have you lost all respect for your elders?" Deng Caijie shouted at Qin Yike, shaking her head, her face turning a dark shade of liver-purple. Her daughter's words had pierced her heart, and she was overcome with humiliated rage, unable to control her temper.
Li Chunlan also chimed in, "You child, you are just a heartless, ungrateful wolf! What did I say when you were little? A heartless thing, wasting all my efforts. What do you think we came here for? If your uncle and I weren't worried about your job, do you think we'd want to come?"
"I said, this is our family matter, and we don't need outsiders worrying about it!" Qin Yike's face was stern, her attitude more resolute than ever before.
Deng Caijie stamped her feet in anger. "Are you stupid? You're turning down such a good job at the county hospital?"
Qin Yike let out a cold laugh, her eyes devoid of any warmth. "Is a job at the county hospital really that good? Can it even compare to a job in Beijing? You ruined the job that would have let me stay at the school without spending a dime, and now you're telling me that a job at the county hospital that requires two hundred thousand is better?"
As she spoke the final words, her voice suddenly rose in pitch, making Deng Caijie's ears ring and her mind go blank. She seemed to understand something, but she was unable to face the reality.
Seeing the money about to slip away, Deng Xinmin immediately revealed his petty nature. After a couple of cold sneers, he muttered, "Who knows how that job in Beijing that didn't cost a dime came about? Maybe..." He cast malicious glances at Qin Yike, sneering again as he threw a massive bucket of filth upon her.
Although Deng Xinmin's words were vague, everyone present understood his meaning.
Qin Weiming's face darkened instantly. "Xinmin, what are you saying? You are Yike's uncle. Is this how you speak about your own niece?"
Qin Yike remained silent. She felt that Qin Weiming was still worth saving; although he was a bit too simple and perhaps a bit henpecked, as a father, he was barely qualified. At least when his daughter was being slandered, he could bravely stand up for her.
Deng Xinmin wasn't afraid of Qin Weiming at all. In his mind, his second brother-in-law wasn't even a paper tiger.
"Did I say something wrong? No matter how capable your daughter is, she still tested out of this small county! In Beijing, she has no background and no connections, so how can she just decide to stay at the school? If you ask me, she's just relying on her looks. She probably latched onto some big shot from Beijing Medical University to secure that position."
Qin Weiming's eyes turned red with rage. How could he not know what kind of person his own daughter was?
"What are you saying!" The honest Qin Weiming grabbed the remote control from the coffee table as a weapon and charged at Deng Xinmin.
Deng Xinmin instinctively ducked behind Deng Caijie for protection. "Second Sister, Brother-in-law is going to hit me!"
"You've gone too far!" Li Chunlan plopped down on the floor and began wailing, slapping her thighs. "This is terrible! The son-in-law wants to hit his mother-in-law! There is no justice in this world!"
The old woman's wailing was full of vigor despite not shedding a single tear; she could squeeze eighteen different tones out of just two sentences.
Qin Yike finally understood what Deng Caijie's "crying and making a scene" routine was all about—it was just in her nature.
