Rebirth in the Apocalypse: Starting with a 30 Million Jackpot
Chapter 11: Facing the Zombies Head-on
Li Yu told Uncle Lai’s daughters and his wife to get into the car first.
Li Hang got out of the car. Xiao Lue was a little nervous, but he still mustered up the courage to follow him out.
When getting out of the car, Auntie had originally wanted to say something to dissuade them.
But seeing that Xiao Hang had already stepped out, she ultimately said nothing.
Xiao Lue picked up a wooden stick from the ground and followed behind Li Yu. Li Yu looked at Xiao Lue with a hint of gratification.
Not bad, he has a bit of backbone.
And so, this scene unfolded
Looking from the far right, Uncle Lai held a large wood-chopping cleaver, followed by Xiao Lue with his wooden stick.
Next were Li Yu and Li Hang, both wielding long blades.
The four of them stood in a row, facing the group of zombies head-on.
Just then, a voice rang out…
"Xiao Yu, what are you all doing?" Li Hongyuan asked curiously from the watchtower, seeing the few people below the wall.
"Dad, turn on the searchlights," Li Yu said.
When the watchtower was designed, the issue of nighttime visibility had been considered, so two ultra-long-range searchlights were installed. It was said they could see hundreds of meters away.
They just consumed a lot of power!
Li Hongyuan turned them on as Li Yu instructed.
The moment they were switched on, Li Hongyuan saw the nearly 20 zombies in the distance clearly and was instantly stunned.
The Second Uncle and Fourth Uncle, who had just climbed up to the watchtower, were also dumbfounded.
The watchtower wasn't large—less than 10 square meters—but it was more than enough for three people to stand in.
"Xiao Yu, are those people? Their walking posture doesn't look like it," the Second Uncle asked.
"Second Uncle, open the gate! Open the gate quickly! Those aren't people. Big Brother said they’re zombies! The whole city is full of these things now, and they bite anyone they see!" Before Li Yu could answer, Li Hang blurted out the reply.
Li Yu glanced at Li Hang, then looked up at the three men on the watchtower and said, "Xiao Hang is right. I just went to pick up Auntie and the others. Open the gate first and let them in."
As soon as he finished speaking, he charged toward the zombie horde.
There was no choice; the few zombies in the front that were walking the fastest were already less than 10 meters away.
If this group of zombies surrounded them, it would be trouble.
Therefore, he had to charge out first to take care of the ones in front so they wouldn't get encircled.
"Xiao Yu!"
"Brother!"
"Yu-zai."
Xiao Hang, standing beside him, and his father and Fourth Uncle on the watchtower all shouted.
Li Yu took the lead, his blade rising and falling.
Two zombies collapsed instantly.
He immediately turned and slashed at two more.
In a flash, these two zombies were also cut down to the ground.
Up on the tower, his father, Li Hongyuan, had been terrified when he saw Li Yu charge out.
But when he saw this scene, he was momentarily stunned—when did his son become so capable?
Li Hongyuan seemed to snap out of it and immediately pulled the Second and Fourth Uncles down to open the gate.
Outside the gate, at the same time.
Lai Dongsheng and Li Hang also charged forward, each picking a zombie.
Lai Dongsheng had immense strength; his heavy, thick wood-chopping cleaver hacked into a zombie's neck.
The zombie's head was four-fifths severed, hanging by a mere thread of skin on its shoulder—it was dead as could be.
Li Hang seemed to have his competitive spirit ignited by Lai Dongsheng, and he thrust his blade directly into a zombie's eye socket.
A clean penetration.
The zombie fell to the ground, swift and efficient.
Just then, two more zombies ran toward Li Hang at high speed. Li Hang turned, saw them charging, and immediately remembered the method his big brother had taught him.
He ran to the right of one zombie, taking advantage of its lack of agility, and thrust his blade in. After taking care of one, the other reacted and ran toward him.
Li Hang retreated, using the zombie's forward momentum to thrust his blade again.
But just then, the zombies from behind caught up.
"Careful!" Li Yu shouted urgently, covering the distance in a few strides.
With a horizontal slash, he decapitated the three zombies rushing toward Li Hang.
It helped that this blade was made of custom-refined steel and was long enough; once sharpened, it was incredibly lethal.
On the other side, Uncle Lai held his cleaver with both hands and swung at a zombie rushing from the right, but after so many strikes, the blade had become dull and the edge was even starting to roll.
The zombies behind continued to follow.
Immediately after, Li Yu charged into the remaining dozen or so zombies, finishing them off within minutes with horizontal and vertical slashes.
Only two zombies remained, their legs severed by him, crawling forward tirelessly!
He handed his blade to Xiao Lue and pointed at the two zombies on the ground.
Xiao Lue, having watched the three men display such power, had been unable to contain himself.
He threw his wooden stick aside and, imitating Li Hang, thrust his blade at one of the crawling zombies.
He hadn't anticipated that a zombie's skull would be so hard; the blade only went in a few centimeters.
However, the zombie on the ground kept crawling, which startled Xiao Lue, causing him to jump back.
It was at this moment that the gate was pushed open by Li Hongyuan and Second Uncle Li Hongda.
Xiao Lue looked at Li Yu with embarrassment and thrust his blade forward again.
With a fierce stab!
*Squelch!*
The zombie's head split open like a smashed watermelon, blood and gore splattering everywhere.
Li Hongyuan rushed over after opening the gate, looking at the zombies lying on the ground with a look of astonishment.
Auntie, seeing from the car that the zombies had been dealt with, hurriedly climbed out.
She ran to Xiao Lue's side, looking at this half-grown boy covered in the blood of the zombies, and her eyes instantly welled up.
Li Hongyuan was just about to ask Li Yu what had happened when he noticed that the zombies on the ground looked somewhat familiar.
Isn't... isn't this Master Li Sanshui, the one who repairs motorcycles?
And isn't this Old Liu and Old Xie from the vegetable market?
What was going on? With a head full of confusion, Li Hongyuan looked at Li Yu.
Seeing Li Hongyuan's gaze, Li Yu said solemnly, "Dad, I told you before. A friend of mine in M City warned me. Based on the current situation, it’s likely a viral infection; they’ve turned into zombies."
"But they were all people!"
"Look at them—do they look like people anymore?" Li Yu said.
Auntie, standing nearby, chimed in, "Brother-in-law, these people have been infected and turned into monsters. Just like Xiao Yu said, they’re called zombies now. They bite anyone they see. Just now, we..."
While they were talking, Li Yu's other relatives rushed out from inside the gate upon hearing the commotion.
Li Yu had wanted to keep his family from seeing this, especially his grandparents, as they were old and he feared scaring them.
But on second thought, the apocalypse had arrived, and he couldn't protect them 24/7.
It was probably for the best that they knew what was happening.
In case something happened in the future, they wouldn't be caught off guard.
However, to Li Yu's surprise, his grandparents weren't scared.
Having lived through the last century, these elders were well-traveled and experienced; they had known hunger, hardship, and exhaustion.
What hadn't they seen?
As long as they weren't starving to death, it wasn't terrifying.
But the younger ones couldn't handle the scene and hid behind their parents.
The Second and Fourth Uncles, having examined the zombies in detail, had faces as grim as water.
After the grandfather and the elder generation questioned Li Hongyuan and learned about the situation outside, they sighed deeply
The world is no longer a peaceful place!
They wondered how the third son, Li Hongqian, who was far away, was doing now.
Once this was said, the grandmother and the others began to worry about the Second Aunt and the little aunt's family in Beijing.
*Sigh!* If only they had been more insistent on persuading them to come back!
Now they didn't know what to do, and it was so far away.
And the outside world was so chaotic!
Li Yu's mother and grandmother began to cry, worrying as they wept.
The atmosphere at the scene suddenly turned sorrowful.
